Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Gerhard Last [Jacket design] (illustrateur). First Edition. Fourth printing of the true South African first edition, published in 1970. The book was first published in 1965, and was reprinted in 1967, 1969 and 1970. ***Very good in pale-grey cloth-covered boards with brown titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked, but there is some foxing and marks to the top edge of the page block. No creasing or tears to the cloth. No bumps. Corners sharp. Internally also very good, with a neat gift inscription at the top corner of the half-title page. ***Please note that the original owner has written some notes very neatly in ink in the margins of some of the pages [please see scans]. Pages clean and white. No creases or tears. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour printed dustwrapper which has not been price-clipped - the publisher's printed price of R1.85 is printed on the back panel. The dustwrapper is complete without any creases or tears - just some light rubbing at the edges, mainly at the top of the spine. No fading. Dustwrapper clean and bright. ***206 pages. 217mm x 140mm. ***'Herman Charles Bosman (5 Feb 1905 - 14 Oct 1951) is widely regarded as South Africa's greatest short-story writer. He studied the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain and developed a style emphasizing the use of satire. His English-language works utilize primarily Afrikaner characters and highlight the many contradictions in Afrikaner society during the first half of the twentieth century. In 1926, Bosman visited his family in Johannesburg and, during an argument, he shot and killed his stepbrother. Bosman was sentenced to death for the crime and was sent to Death Row at the Pretoria Central Prison. His sentence was later reduced to ten years with hard labour. In 1930, he was released on parole after serving half his sentence. His prison experiences formed the basis for his semi-autobiographical book, "Cold Stone Jug". Only three of his books were published during his lifetime: "Mafeking Road" published by Dassie, and "Jacaranda in the Night" and "Cold Stone Jug" published by APB. "Mafeking Road" has never been out of print since its publication in 1947. Because many of his stories were originally published in long-forgotten magazines and journals, there are a number of anthologies by different collators each containing a different selection. His original books have also been published many times by different publishers. [Wiki] ***'Herman Charles Bosman will be remembered as one of South Africa's foremost short story writers, a writer of superb skill in characterisation, narration and command of language. This volume includes four hitherto unpublished Schalk Lourens stories as well as a selection from his two highly praised collections "Mafeking Road" and "Unto Dust". It also contains extracts from "Cold Stone Jug", Bosman's witty and often poignant account of life in a South African prison in the twenties, and a number of his essays from "A Cask of Jerepigo"' [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***A fourth printing of the true first edition in nice collectable condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
