Quarterly Review, 1809. 9 pp. pp. 153-161. "This clearly written and well organized book is called the first textbook of general chemistry written in the English language to be based on Lavoisier's new chemistry. The principles are illustrated with experiments." -- Cole. / Accum (1769-1838), born in Germany where the family operated a small soap boiling business. In 1793 Accum came to London to take a position at Brande, apothecaries to George II. He became friends with Anthony Carlisle and William Nicholson and established his own laboratory. He assisted Sir Humphry Davy until 1803 (the year this book was issued). He also began lecturing in 1802 where is students included Benjamin Silliman and William Peck. He supplied apparatus to institutions abroad. Amazingly, in December 1820, he was arrested for mutilating books at the Royal Institution Library, which triggered his exiting England for Germany. "The value of Accum's work lies in the way he saw and exploited the technological possibilities of the rapidly advancing science of chemistry." [DSB]. A Pioneering Work in the Field of Food Chemistry and Safety ACCUM, Fredrick. A Treatise on Adulterations of Food, and Culinary Poisons, exhibiting the fraudulent Sophistications of Bread, Beer, Wine, Spirituous Liquors, Tea, Coffee. and other Articles employed in domestic economy. And methods of detecting them. The second edition. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1820. Second edition. Small octavo (6 7/8 x 4 1/4 inches; 175 x 108 mm.). Engraved vignette title-page, [xxiv], [1]-360 pp. Rebound to style in full calf, spine tooled in blind, tan morocco label lettered in gilt. Some minor foxing, otherwise an excellent example. Frederich Christian Accum (1769-1838) was a German chemist, whose most important achievements included advances in the field of gas lighting, efforts to keep processed foods free from dangerous additives, and the promotion of interest in the science of chemistry to the general populace. A Treatise on Adulterations of Food, and Culinary Poisons, was a pioneering work in the field of food chemistry and safety. It was first published in 1820 and reached a second edition, the same year. The book exposed the various fraudulent practices in the preparation of common food and drink items during the early 19th century. Accum focused on revealing the adulterations present in a variety of food products, including bread, beer, wine, spirituous liquors, tea, coffee, and other household items. The treatise was part of the broader social reform movement that sought to address public health concerns arising from the widespread adulteration of food and drinks. The book not only exposed the fraudulent practices but also provided methods for detecting adulterations, empowering consumers to make informed choices about the food they purchased. Axford, p. 397; Bitting, p. 2; Cagle 532 (1st edn); Simon BG 17.

London: Clowes, for R. Ackermann, 1818. * The invention of coal-gas lighting, and later gas heating, precipitated the most significant acceleration in the increased use of coal and the inevitable release of its poisonous by-products. Such impacts were enormous; "the amount of coal used by the gas industry rose from just 500,000 tons in 1830 to 10 million tons in 1887; fugitive emissions from coal undergoing carbonization further contaminated the air with a mixture of smoke and foul-smelling vapours" - Thorsheim, Inventing Pollution, Coal, Smoke and Culture in Britain since 1800, - see p.137ff. Frederick Accum (1769 - 1838) was a German chemist, whose most important achievements included advances in the field of gas lighting. From 1793 to 1821, he lived in London and following an apprenticeship as an apothecary, opened his own commercial laboratory enterprise. At the request of the Gas Light and Coke Company, Accum became a member of the board of directors and carried out many experiments, instrumental in the conception and design of the extremely successful gasworks on Curtain Road. This was the first in London and the first to supply gas lighting to both private and public areas. Around 1810, Accum became involved with the publisher Rudolph Ackermann, who was active in the promotion of various artistic and scientific projects to introduce into England the illumination of towns by gas. It is widely acknowledged that this present book, published by Ackermann, was essentially responsible for the prompt adoption of this mode of lighting in London and other British cities. Of the seven beautiful hand-coloured engraved plates, four show machinery and three various light fixtures and chandeliers. From early on in its conception, Accum had been concerned with the by-products of coal gas production, which included tar, ammonium and sulphur compounds. These were typically buried or dumped into nearby waterways and were especially damaging to the environment. In 1820, Accum began demanding legal measures to prevent the discharge of these by-products into the sewage systems and rivers. His criticisms were met with few positive reactions. Electricity did not become a practical reality until metal filament lamps were perfected in 1911 and the Electricity (Supply) Act had been passed in 1926, leading to the establishment of the National Grid. The gas mantle had allowed the gas industry to compete with its new rival electricity for much longer than would have otherwise occurred, gas fires (replacing coal grates) were common and gas lighting was still preferred in some towns in the 1950s. Gas lighting has not completely disappeared in the UK and there are still approximately 2,000 public gas-lights in the greater London area. From Accum's introduction: "The artificial production and supply of light during the absence of the sun, unquestionably holds a distinguished rank among the most important arts of civilized life. If we could for a moment suppose the privation of artificial light, it would follow as an immediate consequence that the greatest part of the globe on which we dwell, would cease to be the habitation of man How much do our comforts, and how greatly does the extent of our powers, in the common affairs of life, depend upon the production and supply of artificial light. The flame of a single candle animates a family, every one follows his occupation, and no dread is felt of the darkness of night The scheme of lighting houses, streets,
