Hardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 1st Edition. As new condition blue boards with silver spine lettering contained in a price-clipped illustrated dust jacket. Includes Introduction; Prologue; Index; About the Authors; and Acknowledgments. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. 3rd Printing. " "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed" This terse message, transmitted live from the surface of the Moon. on July 20, 1969, was heard by more than a billion people a quarter of a million miles away on Earth. It was a once-in-a-lifetime moment when all humankind was united in awe and triumph, and nowhere was the exultation greater than at Mission Control, where Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton were among the wildly cheering NASA personnel. Both men were heroes of the New Frontier, members of one of the world's smallest elites: the Mercury Seven, America's original astronauts. Shepard was our first man in space; Slayton would fly on one of the last Apollo missions, the historic rendevous with the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz, which signaled a brief pause in the intense race between the US and the USSR to establish preeminence in space. Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton were part of America's effort to reach the Moon from the very beginning, and no one else could be as qualified to tell this fascinating and trilling tale of the courage, dedication, and teamworld that made the journey to the moon possible. Moon Shot is a compelling human drama of the sacrifices and risks asked of a small but remarkable group of astronauts who put their lives on the line as they led the way to the lunar landscape. It's the story of those who built, launched, and flew America's spacecraft, a dramatic accont of a decade of superpower rivalry, scientific discovery, and personal bravery. Here are the successes - the first orbital flight, the first spacewalk, the first moon landing. Here, too, is the Apollo disaster, when three astronauts met a fiery death at Cape Canaveral; the split-second decision to land Apollo II on the moon with only seconds of fuel remaining; and the epic adventure of the crew of the crippled Apollo 13, two hundred thousand miles from home. Filled with fascinating details and a frank, knowledgeable assessment of the NASA program, Moon Shot reflects the risk, the excitement, and the accomplishiments of the men who traveled faster and farther than any humans before them - and returned safely to tell their extrraordinary tale." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. "A must read.An insight into the wonders of space flight, yes. But more important, readers come to know Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton, and come to respect their courage and feel genuine affection for these two American heroes." - President George Bush "Moon Shot is a damn fine book! Even those of us who thought we were thoroughly covering the story, never heard all the tales to be found between these covers.Gripping, authoritative, suspenseful, poignant, and skillfully told, this is the ultimated inside story of the U.S. space program." - Walter Cronkite "A first-hand, white-knuckle, behind-the-scenes account of the race to the moon by America's coolest astronaut and colleagues. It's rich in unfamiliar anecdotes, funny, and surprisingly moving." - Carl Sagan "From the early Cold War days of the Space Race through the beginnings of the 'thaw', Moon Shot comes alive and answers some of the questions most often asked about space flight. "What's it really feel like in Space?' Well, Shepard and Slayton take you along for the experience in Moon Shot. I believe you'll enjoy the trip." - Senator John Glenn.

Rear Admiral Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. (November 18, 1923 - July 21, 1998) was an American astronaut, naval aviator, test pilot, and businessman. In 1961 he became the first American to travel into space, and in 1971 he walked on the Moon. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Shepard became a naval aviator in 1946, and a test pilot in 1950. He was selected as one of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts in 1959, and in May 1961 he made the first manned Project Mercury flight, MR-3, in a spacecraft he named Freedom 7. His craft entered space, but was not capable of achieving orbit. He became the second person, and the first American, to travel into space, and the first space traveler to manually control the orientation of his craft. Shepard was designated as the commander of the first manned Project Gemini mission, but was grounded in 1963 due to Ménière's disease. This was surgically corrected in 1969, and in 1971, Shepard commanded the Apollo 14 mission, piloting the Apollo Lunar Module Antares to the most accurate landing of the Apollo missions. At age 47, he became the oldest person to walk on the Moon, and the only one of the Mercury Seven astronauts to do so. Collector's Edition. Limited Edition, number 1103 of 3000.
