Hardcover. Etat : Good. Alfred A Knopf, 1931, Volume II of Civilization of the East. With 249 black and white illustrations Hardcover, 404 pp. First Edition. Good/ NO dust jacket. Black cloth covered boards with gold lettering on front and red block and gold lettering on spine. Light bumping and scuffing to edges of covers and light overall scuffing and rubbing to spine. Binding tight. Light to moderate age spotting to edges of text block. Otherwise pages are clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. [From Introduction] This volume is the second of the series planned as an introduction to the study of the arts in Asia, and is devoted to the Indian world, both Muhammadan and non-Muhammadan, including Farther India and the Malay Archipelago, but excluding Kashgaria and Tibet, which will find a place, with China, in Volumes III and IV of this series. The fact is that India, with the cultures which trace their origin to it, is a world apart, one of the three or four great centres of human thought. There have been an Indian aesthetic ideal and an Indian humanism of equal value to the world at large with the aesthetic ideal and the humanism of either the Mediterranean countries or China. To convey an idea of what this centre of culture was, I have given copious illustrations and quotations from texts, as in the previous volume, or even more so. The mere juxtaposition of a page from the Lalitavistara with a relief from Amaravati, or of a stanza of the Gita Govinda with a Rajput miniature, will create the atmosphere and suggest the surroundings in which they came into being better than any dissertation. By such means as these I have attempted to call up a picture of Indian civilization, while referring my readers to an-other of my works for a history of facts and ideas. .

Introduction, Footnotes, 211 black-and-white Illustrations, [x], 301 pages; followed by an Index to all four volumes of the series, separately paginated: i-xl, and colophon. The original black cloth is excellent, with the slightest hint of rubbing to the bottom edge and tail of spine; gilt decoration and lettering on the spine and upper board (lettering in red squares on the spine) remain bright. The interior glossy paper is clean and creamy-bright throughout, though the endpapers show toning over the hinges. Top-edge is gilt, binding strong. The original dust jacket has a sunned spine and three chips; it is unclipped (and unpriced). [Please see my five images of the actual book.] "The interrelation of art and literature and of culture and society is kept in mind at all times. M. Grousset shows that although Japan has inherited much from Buddhist China, its insular position, which welded the people into one of the most homogenous of races, also encouraged a wholly original adaptation and development of the foreign influence, so that Japanese architecture, sculpture, and painting are indisputably distinctive."---From the flap. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.

Buch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book presents an assortment of case-studies pertaining to the use of sustainable technologies for heavy metal removal and recovery from mining and metallurgical wastes, construction and demolition wastes, spent catalysts and electronic wastes.Wastewaters from diverse industrial and mining activities have caused pollution problems, but these sectors also serve as a hotspot for metal recovery. Several metal removal technologies based on physical, chemical and biological processes have been successfully implemented in full-scale operation, while metal recovery, which is beneficial for economic and environmental reasons, is still limited due to challenges arising from downstream processing. For instance, microbial recovery (bioleaching) of metals from their ores is an established technology with a number of full-scale applications. Bioleaching of electronic wastes to recover metals is also a highly promising technology with low environmental impact and high cost-effectiveness; yet, this technology is still at its infancy. As the individual chapters of this book focuses on the applications and limitations of different technologies, this book will serve as an excellent resource for chemical engineers, environmental engineers, mining engineers, biotechnologists, graduate students and researchers in these areas. 292 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book covers the principles, underlying mechanisms, thermodynamic functions, kinetics and modeling aspects of sustainable technologies, particularly from the standpoint of applying physical, chemical and biological processes for the treatment of wastewater polluted with heavy metals. Particular emphasis has been given to technologies that are based on adsorption, electro-coagulation, bio-precipitation, bio-solubilization, phytoremediation and microbial electrolysis.Metal contamination in the environment is one of the persisting global issues. The adverse health effects of heavy metals on human beings and its impact on the environment has been well-documented. Several physico-chemical and biological technologies have been successfully implemented to prevent and control the discharge of industrial heavy metal emissions. On the contrary, metal resource depletion has also accelerated dramatically during the 20th century due to rapid advances in industrial engineering and medical sciences, which requires large amount of raw materials. To meet the global metal demand, in recent years, novel research lines have started to focus on the recovery of metals from metal contaminated waste streams. In order to conflate both metal removal and recovery, new technologies have been successfully tested, both at the lab and pilot-scale. The target audience of this book primarily comprises of research experts, practicing engineers in the field of environmental/chemical technology and graduate students. 300 pp. Englisch.
