Hardcover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. 1951, 152pp. There are a few puckers in the rear cover, else VG. Limited to 200cc, this number 177, Signed and dated by John Wilson Townsend, a Kentucky author and bookseller, who wrote the explanatory note. Subtitled: BOZ AT IDLEBERG, which is the third of the IDLEBERG PAPERS, originally published by Ambrose Barbour, 1842-1848, under the name Oliver West, in the New York Knickerbocker, considered our first American magazine. This is the first reprinting of all eight essays. Barbour, born in Danville, Kentucky, 1822, entered Centre College in 1834, at the age of 12. He graduated in the class of 1838, which included John C. Breckinridge, who would become the country's youngest Vice President. There is very little known of him, or his whereabouts, after that. We know that his Idleberg papers appeared during the period 1842-1848, that he spent some time in Philadelphia, and that he returned to Danville, where he died at the early age of 31, probably of tuberculosis. Idleberg is a fictional creation, probably an idealized vision of Barbour's hometown, and/or Kentucky in general. Signed by Author(s).
