Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> This is a collection of tales from the Shetland Isles, some ancient and some of recent times, and mainly heard in the island of Unst, the most northerly in Britain. Most of them have been handed down from generation to generation, and have been heard by the author as he sat round the peat fire listening to the ancients of the land. There are stories of whales and whal- ing, of dogs, of the supernatural, of Viking invaders and adventurers, and of the strange things that happened to the fishermen who at one time went out from the island in hundreds. Some of the stories are told in the author's own words, some in the words of the actual tellers of the tales. Andrew Cluness admits frankly that while many of the stories are based on fact, the truth has often been adorned until it now appears untrue: but he contends that the delight and value of these legends is such that they deserve to be rescued from the oblivion which threat- ens them through the advent of radio and other.
