Annie. 24/03/93." * Christiane Baroche (1935-2024)…, lauréate du prix Goncourt de la nouvelle, fut pendant plus de dix ans lectrice de manuscrits pour Gallimard, l'éditeur d'Ernaux, avant de devenir elle-même romancière. C'est à ce titre qu'elle joua un rôle dans les débuts littéraires d'Ernaux au milieu des années 1970. Un exemplaire deLa Place, dédicacé par Ernaux à Baroche neuf mois plus tôt, la remercie de l'avoir «fait "naître" (dans le bonheur) il y a dix ans ». Les deux écrivaines entretenèrent, dès l'aube de leurs carrières , une relation d'amitié et d'admiration mutuelle dont témoigne leur correspondance et les articles élogieux de Christiane Baroche. Pourtant à partir de la sortie deL'Occupation, Christiane Baroche, alors journaliste du Magazine Littéraire deviendra plus critique et sévère avec les uvres de sa consur, ce qui expliquepeut-être la moindre effusion de cette dédicace. il n'en demeure pas moins qu'Ernaux fait fi de leur divergences littéraires et adresse à sa "découvreuse" une amicale dédicace sur cette joyeuse pérégrination citadine. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition, with no deluxe paper issue. Laconique mais important envoi autographe daté et signé d'Annie Ernaux à la précieuse lectrice de Gallimard, l'écrivaine Christia…ne Baroche : «merci.» * Paru trois ans après Les Armoires vides, Ce qu'ils disent ou rien, annonce déjà les grands motifs de l'uvre à venir : la honte de classe, le déterminisme social, la difficulté d'être une femme. Le roman reçoit un accueil d'estime, loin encore de la reconnaissance que vaudront à l'auteure La Place (Renaudot 1984) puis le prix Nobel de littérature en 2022. De même, l'écrivaine Christiane Baroche, n'est pas encore, l'année de cette dédicace, la lauréate du prix Goncourt des nouvelles. C'est en tant que très précieuse lectrice de manuscrits chez Gallimard qu'elle est ici remerciée d'un bref mais signifiant envoi. Nul doute que ce second roman de la jeune enseignante de banlieue doit à sa dédicataire l'avis favorable qui confirme son statut d'écrivain, quelques années avant La femme gelée et La Place. Ernaux offrira d'ailleurs à Baroche un exemplaire de La Place enrichi d'une dédicace explicite:"Pour Christiane, qui m'a fait "naître" dans le bonheur il y a dix ans. Annie. 3/02/84." Les deux femmes de lettre, ici à l'aube de leur carrière, entretiendront dès lors une relation d'amitié et d'admiration mutuelle dont témoigne leur correspondance et les articles élogieux de Christiane Baroche. Laconic but significant autograph inscription, dated and signed by Annie Ernaux, to Gallimard's esteemed reader, the writer Christiane Baroche: « merci. » * Published three years after Les Armoires vides, Ce qu'ils disent ou rien already announces the major themes of the work to come: class shame, social determinism, and the difficulty of being a woman. The novel met with a respectful critical reception, still far from the recognition that would later come to the author with La Place (Prix Renaudot, 1984) and then the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022. Likewise, the writer Christiane Baroche had not yet, in the year of this inscription, received the Prix Goncourt de la nouvelle. It is in her capacity as Gallimard's highly valued manuscript reader that she is thanked here with a brief but meaningful inscription. There is no doubt that this second novel by the young suburban schoolteacher owed to its dedicatee the favourable opinion that confirmed her status as a writer, some years before La femme gelée and La Place. Ernaux would later give Baroche a copy of La Place enriched with an explicit dedication: "Pour Christiane, qui m'a fait "naître" dans le bonheur il y a dix ans. Annie. 3/02/84." The two women of letters, then at the outset of their careers, would go on to maintain a relationship of friendship and mutual admiration, as attested by their correspondence and by Christiane Baroche's laudatory articles. It was only from L'Occupation onward that Baroche, then a journalist for the Magazine Littéraire, became more critical and severe toward her fellow writer's works, though we cannot say whether their friendship was profoundly affected by it.

Flat-signed and dated works by Ernaux are very scarce, especially for the English-language translations. Happening is Ernaux's best known and most shockin…g work, published as L'Événement by Gallimard in 2000, and often cited for its unflinching portrayal of a Ernaux's search for an abortion in 1960s France (a time when abortion was illegal). Ernaux was the recipient of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature, with the citation praising "the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory". On the occasion of the Nobel, Emmanuel Macron wrote that "Annie Ernaux has been writing for 50 years the novel of the collective and intimate memory of our country. Her voice is that of women's freedom, and the century's forgotten ones." A very good copy indeed, with the faintest scuffing to the front cover; signed and dated (21 August 2019) to the half-title.
