Engineering for adaptation is particularly c- plicated when the distributed system itself is composed of autonomous entities that, on one hand, may act collaboratively and with benevolence, and, on the other,maybehavesel?shlywhilepursuingtheirowninterests.Still,t heseentities have to coordinate themselves in order to adapt appropriately to the prevailing environmental conditions, and furthermore, to deliberate upon their own and the systems con?guration, and to be transparent to their users yet consistent with any human requirements. The question, therefore, of how to organize the envisagedadaptationforsuchautonomousentitiesinasystematicwaybecomes of paramount importance. The ?rst international workshop on Organized Adaptation in Multi-Agent Systems (OAMAS) was a one-day event held as part of the workshop p- gram arranged by the international conference on Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (AAMAS). It was hosted in Estoril during May, 2008, and was attended by more than 30 researchers. OAMAS was the steady convergence of a number of lines of research which suggested that such a workshop would be timely and opportune. This includes the areas of autonomic computing, swarm intelligence, agent societies, self-organizing complex systems, and emergence in general. The papers in this volume are drawn from the three meetings that took place in 2009. AAMAS COINatAAMAS 2009 took place on May 12, 2009, as a satellite event of the 8th International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (AAMAS 2009), in Budapest, Hungary. With 35 registered participants, the workshop was an exciting and fruitful gathering where discussions followed the papers presented by an international group of speakers. We had participants from Australia, Italy, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, UK and USA, to name a few. Of the 19 submissions, 12 were selected for presentation and,subsequently,10 wereinvitedto be revisedandincluded inthe proceedings. IJCAI COINatIJCAI2009tookplaceonJuly11,2009,asasatelliteeventofthe21st- ternationalJointConferenceonArti?cialIntelligence(IJCAI2009),inPasadena, California, USA. We had 15 submissions, 10 of which were selected for presen- tion at the workshop.The workshop sessions gave rise to a stimulating and p- ductive gathering with an invited talk from Maarten Sierhuis of NASA entitled "TowardsOrganization-AwareMulti-Agent Systems," followed by presentations of accepted papers. An international audience from countries such as Australia, Brazil, India, Canada, Spain, France, UK and USA participated in the wo- shop. From the 10 presented papers, 6 were invited to be revised and included in the proceedings.
