Hardback. Etat : Very Good+. 1st edn. ~Original dark green cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Spine very slightly sunned. 8vo (23 x 16 cm). All edges toned. Hinges sound, endpapers uncracked at gutters. Light offset browning to endpapers. Pencil owner's signature to title page. Pencil annots in old hand to three pages after preface, and written around margins of Synopsis. These are notes (perhaps lecture notes) on the Novum Organum and Bacon's work in general and thus offer an interesting 19th-century response to the text.Published in conjunction with a Latin edition of the Novum Organum with notes and appendices by Kitchin. George William Kitchin (1827-1912), scholar and dean of Durham. Kitchin had a successful career at Oxford, where he was 'an important figure in the development of teaching in modern humanities subjects' (ODNB) before becoming first Dean of Durham and then Chancellor of Durham University. This translation of the Novum Organum and the accompanying edition of the Latin original were his first published works. This is the third English translation of the Novum Organum, following translations of 1733 and 1831, the latter condemned for its 'radical faults' in the preface to this vol. Scarce. ~Robust packaging. Overseas tracking available on request. Size: xxx, 338pp. Binding sound, text unmarked.
