Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Minor damage to the wrappers but internally in excellent condition. 79, [9] pages. Only Edition. In German. With ten black and white plates of photographs of the Munich Synagogue. Title translates as: "Memorial Book: 50 years of Munich's main synagogue, 1887-1937, " Published in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the original Munich Haupt Synagogue, which was destroyed by the Germans the following year. This book was issued on behalf of the Jewish Religious Community of Munich by Leo Baerwald and Ludwig Feuchtwanger. Leo Baerwald was rabbi of the Munich Jewish community from 1918-1940. Leo Baerwald was born in Saaz, Austria-Hungary (now ?atec, Czech Republic) on October 23, 1883. The son of Aron Baerwald, the rabbi of Saaz, and Fanny Lazarus, he was descended from a family of rabbis and well-known Jewish scholars including Moritz Lazarus and Heymann Steinthal. Baerwald studied at the Jüdisch-theologisches Seminar in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland) . After serving in World War I as a military chaplain (Feldrabbiner) , he became a rabbi for the Jewish community in Munich. He kept this position until his departure from Germany. From 1933 on Baerwald struggled against the Nazi regime. He was refused a travel permit to leave the country for health reasons. In 1940 he was finally able to leave Germany for England, where he waited for a visa to the United States. After arriving in the United States, Baerwald settled in New York City, where he became the rabbi of the Congregation Beth Hillel in Washington Heights. This congregation was made up of Jewish refugees from Munich and Nuremberg. He retired from this position in 1955. After his retirement he continued to support the congregation and also worked at the Leo Baeck Institute and the American Federation of Jews from Central Europe. Leo Baerwald died in New York in 1970 at the age of 86. Ludwig Feuchtwanger (1885-1947) was trained as a lawyer, but worked as an author, journalist, and publisher. He was editor of the publishing house Duncker & Humbolt and in the years 1936 to 1939 Feuchtwanger also served as director of the Jewish teaching house in Munich and as lecturer at the Central Office for Adult Education (Mittelstelle der juedischen Erwachsenenbildung). In 1938, he was imprisoned in Dachau concentration camp. Ludwig Feuchtwanger and his family managed to emigrate to Winchester in England in 1939. He was a lecturer at the "Jewish Historical Society of England" and died in Winchester, Great Britain, on July 14, 1947. His papers are also housed at the Leo Baeck Institute.
