The medical literature of the past few years has reflected concern with regard to the problem of hospital-acquired infections, particularly postoperative staphylococcic infections. The concern persists currently, as indicated by the number of articles on the subject contained in this book and, despite the many advances made in preoperative and postoperative management of patients, the incidence of infection appears to be as high today as it was 20 years ago. These observations again emphasize the great importance of the Listerian doctrine and of well-established principles in wound management, for which there are no substitutes-not even antibiotics. A few years ago, there was great enthusiasm about the development of chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of malignant disease. Because of the many agents being tested each year, it seemed likely that new and effective ones might be forthcoming as rapidly as new antibiotics for the treatment of specific infections. Unfortunately, they have not appeared. Most of the new tested drugs have been relatively ineffective or have been so toxic to the host that their clinical application has not been feasible.
