The American Philatelist is the oldest continuously published philatelic journal in the world, the first issue having appeared in January 1887. The magazine is published monthly for members of the American Philatelic Society. It has the appearance of a standard glossy color magazine, typically running about 100 pages per issue. As the house organ, there are monthly departments covering American Philatelic Society news and activities, a president's column, and other articles specific to the Society itself. The core of the magazine consists of 5-10 articles on subjects related to philately. All of its articles feature color illustrations, graphs and charts. This issue contains the following articles: "State of the Hobby: Can Generalists Detect Fakes?" (identifying fake philatelic items) by Vincent Centonze; "Margaret V. Benson: An Obliging Postmistress from Nikolski, Alaska" (first day cancellation Nikolski, Alaska August 4, 1938) by Robert W. Collins; "Mysterious Conductor on a Japanese Stamp" (identifying the source of the image on a stamp) by David Shaw; "A 'Bonanza' Yukon Find" (covers postmarked from towns made famous during the Yukon Gold Rush saved from destruction) by Hugh Delaney; "Collecting Coast to Coast: Double Your Collecting Pleasure" (true double printing of stamps vs EFOs) by Wayne Youngblood; "Exploring Back-of-the-Book: Newspapers as Postage Due Mail" by David Straight "Inside the NPM: The Postal Service Goes to War" (V-mail during World War II) by Allen Kane; "World in a Nutshell: Penrhyn" (Penrhyn atoll part of the Cook Islands) by Bob Lamb.
