Etat : New. Third edition, first impression. This detailed pharmacopoeia was published "to meet the needs of the students working towards the examination for entry to the National Association of Medical Herbalists (NAHM)" (Tobyn, p. 18). It is notably scarce with WorldCat listing only five copies of the third edition. "NAHM was founded in the UK in 1868 to promote professional practice and to set education standards" (ibid.). It remains the oldest professional body of practising herbalists in the world. The first edition was brought out in 1905, and the second in 1921, with 40 non-poisonous herbs added and the poisonous remedies removed. The work includes details on weights and measures, botanical drugs and preparations, recipes of medical compounds, and an extensive vocabulary. The compiler Arthur Barker was twice president of NAHM and the author of Pocket Herbal Prescriber (1938). During the Second World War, he wrote an impassioned article on the service of herbalists: "if spared from military service the botanic practitioner, or natural healer, must devote himself (or herself) more ungrudgingly and devotedly to the high calling. There will be less orthodox treatment available and the unregistered practitioner with skill and knowledge, though officially unrecognised, must be available both night and day" (NIHM, p. 20). Graeme Tobyn, The Western Herbal Tradition: 2000 Years of Medicinal Plant Knowledge, 2010; "Arthur Barker, Part II", National Institute of Medical Herbalists: Herbal Thymes, Summer 2016. Octavo. Original dark blue buckram, spine lettered in gilt. With 2 half-tone photographic portraits of the compilers, illustrations in the text. Cloth toned, covers marked and slightly bowed, minor loss to lettering on spine, occasional foxing. A very good copy.
