So completely did it identify religion with the non-religious activities of spirit that it has failed to control them effectively by spiritual and religious standards. Lutheran religion held aloof from the world, entrenched in private religious experience, and has therefore failed to redeem the world. But to have gone to South Africa at this juncture would have been far too much like running away. Later on he was felt to have established a certain claim to the Primacy itself, and indeed, after William Temple's death, his name was at least under consideration. There were some who hoped to see him at London one day; but he could never have stood the physical strain. Eventually, in the general post which followed Temple's translation from York to Canterbury and Garbett's from Winchester to York, Mervyn was offered the see of Winchester and had little hesitation about accepting.
