Edité par Mountpleasant [Mt. Pleasant, OH - Mount Pleasant, Ohio]: printed and published by the author [Elisha Bates], 1825., 1825
Vendeur : David Hallinan, Bookseller, Columbus, MS, Etats-Unis
Second edition (as stated upon title page). viii, 320 pages. Hardcover; H 20.5cm x L 13.25cm. Original full leather rubbed and scuffed, board corners worn with strongest wear to front board's top corner, spine leather scuffed too with tear and shallow loss at heel, minor loss to spine's original maroon title label with gilt lettering still bright. Strong foxing and toning to leaves; faded antiquarian inscription on front free endpaper; pages 3-6 pulled and worn along fore-edge; top corner of pages 37-38 chipped; short blue wax pencil marks on pages 108-109; faded pencil writing on rear pastedown. Binding is still firm. A good+ copy. A reasonably early and uncommon Ohio imprint just thirty years removed from the occasion of the first book being published in the state in 1795 at Cincinnati. Born in Virginia in 1781, Elisha Bates resided in Mount Pleasant, Ohio for most of his life and earned prominence as a Quaker minister (particularly for his opposition to Elias Hicks) and printer, the latter career finding its impetus upon Bates's 1818 purchase of a magazine and initiating and editing his own periodical printed under several titles but with the longest run being (1827-1836) as "The Miscellaneous Repository." THE DOCTRINES OF FRIENDS, with its first and second editions published in 1825, remains Elisha Bates's most famous book and is cited by Quakerpedia as one of the most important Quaker doctrinal treatises of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
