Trading out of the port of Poole in their small sailing ships, they established a successful commerce with the European ports, The North American colonies and, more importantly and lastingly in the fisheries of Newfoundland. This trading lasted from Elizabethan times up until the middle of the nineteenth century. Poole?s share of this trade varied from decade to decade but, in the more prosperous period starting in the late 1700?s and lasting until about 1830, Poole had the lion?s share of the Newfoundland trade of the ?Western Adventurers? This volume covers the family history, the commercial interests, the newly built halls and mansions and the various epitaphs remaining to champion these old traders and entrepreneurs.* An ACCEPTABLE damp stained copy of the 1st. edition, suitable for reference, with tatty but essentially complete jacket.* 1976-12-01. n.

Hardback. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Good. First Edition. This copy is in fine condition bound in blue cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine and the upper board. The price clipped dust wrapper has some edge wear and one or two closed tears so best described as good. This copy is from the library of the late Sir Owen Aisher (1900-1993) who was the Chairman of Marley Ltd (1945-1982) and bears an inscription to him on the front paste down. He inherited from his father the ability to read widely, urged on with such aphorisms as 'to read much is to learn much', 'to learn much is to know much' and 'knowledge is power'. This book vividly recreates the history od the great merchants of commerce and their housesand heritage in Dorset. Ref LL1.
