Hard Cover. Etat : Good. Etat de la jaquette : No DJ. First Edition. Red clot covered boards. Bumped corners. viii, 168 pages. clean and tight. "Foreword - MANY BOOKS have been written about Canada-histories, biographies, books of travel, books of exploration and adventure, novels depicting life in certain periods, the hardships and courage of our pioneers, the endurance and loneliness of our emigrants from foreign lands, the qualities and the queerness of certain religious sects. Every province has had its share of publicity, of praise and of criticism. In poetry as well as in prose, we have told the story of the Indian, the Eskimo, the French habitant, and the hardy settlers of the plains and northlands. While the foundations of our national life were being dug in virgin soil, while building was going on in north, south, east and west with dauntless industry and endurance, while towns and cities were growing thriftily and more and more land was being tilled, while our men and women worked from before dawn to after sunset, Canada was travelled by others who escaped such monotony and drudgery by living on the road. These transients were made up of good characters and bad. They were agents, peddlers, and men seeking honest work which, at times, even then, was hard to find. In the main they typified the kind of person who will not be bound by convention, who shirks responsibility, and who seeks freedom in remote places where, should craftiness or dishonesty become necessary for sustenance, it may escape detection or, at least, prosecution. As well, there were the unemployed, mostly people who had been lured to Canada by glowing advertisements of its riches, and had come unprepared for a period of waiting. The last dollar gone for food in town or city, they took what little they had and set out to look for a livelihood, either earned or merely accepted from the larders of country people who were seldom without plenty. The writer was a child among us in those days, and the impressions received by her were deep and lasting. Remembering these people, she deemed it worth while to add their story to the printed records of our social life and customs in the early twentieth century. In doing so, there came to mind others who journeyed along the road, bringing into our lives a touch of romance. We who lived in the old house with our little sister find satisfaction in the authenticity of her recollections. LILL BEATTIE." Size: 8vo.

Beattie, in this compassionate and understanding book offers a chronicle of the Six Nations Indians of the Iroquoian Confederacy. A once proud and strong race are bravely bracing themselves against wasting tribal virtues and declining fortune and power. Today there is a rebirth of Iroquoian nationalism, with the revival of old customs, ceremonials, and dislikes. It is a story that should command the attention of everyone, those who make and administer our laws, and the elector who places them in the seats of power and justice."
