Hardcover. 128 p.; 21.5 cm. Contents: Preface -- The crisis of our time: I. Humanism and barbarism, II. The reconstruction of standards-- The debt of modern civilization to Greece -- Thoughts on education -- Welsh nationalism to-day -- The Church in Wales and modern Welsh cultural life.-- `More important and more lasting than any particular contribution to our ciilization is, as I have said, the spirit which informs Greek art, Greek literature, and Greek thought, their method of approach to life, their mental attitude. That spirit Arnold summed up in the words "sweetness and light"; justly enough, forthe sunny humanism of the Greek does sweeten and refresh cultures that have gone sour and stale, and their open-eyed vision and acceptance of reality does enlighten.' (65) -- `It has sometimes been argued that Welsh is an economic disadvantage; that a Welsh-speaking Welshman, though he may have acquired a working knowledge of English, may not have sufficient grasp of it to meet Englishmen on equal terms in commerce or the labour market. There was at one time some substance in this argument, but in these days of universal education, when English is taught in all the schools of Wales,it is not very impressive. A man who, in present circumstances, leaves school with so little mastery of English that a few months in England would not remedy his deficiency is hardly likely to be the sortof person who would have set the Thames on fire even had he been born in London. The economic argument, however, cannot be reversed; it is not possible to advocate the preservation of the Welsh language on economic grounds. The case for that must rest on cultural and patriotic grounds' (99) Good orig. maroon cloth, 1 cm. hole in lower joint, in good dj.
