With thirty two plates to the Legacy of Rome, collated and complete. With twenty plates to the Legacy of Greece, collated and complete. With forty plates to the Legacy of the Middle ages, collated and complete. With forty plates to the Legacy of Islam, collated and complete. With forty five plates to the Legacy of Israel, collated and complete. With thirty four plates to the Legacy of Egypt, collated and complete The volume on Rome has pictorial gilt to the front board. With a sticker from Blackwell's booksellers to the front pastedown of The Legacy of Rome. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper of the Legacy of Islam. Same inscription of in pencil to the recto of the front endpaper in Legacy of the Middle Ages and the Legacy of Israel. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, smart. Very lightly rubbed to the boards. The cloth is rubbed to the head and tail of the spine of the volume on Rome, and is beginning to fray a little at the head. The remaining volumes are lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine. The front hinge is starting, but firm to The Legacy of Rome, and both hinges are starting to the volume on the Middle Ages. Internally, firmly bound, with bright and clean pages throughout. Very Good. book.

One is HUGE and in beautiful FULL COLOR: i.e. Preliminary Geologic Map of Central and Eastern Montana 1921. It measures an impressive 62" wide by 40" tall when unfolded. Illustrated with chart and 7 b/w photos/plates. Bound in the original gray wraps, printed in black. This book is from the library of, and bears the tiny ink stamp of Robert B. Sosman. A geophysicist and physical chemist, Robert Browning Sosman authored THE PHASES OF SILICA (1965, New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press). Sosman received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907, at the age of 26. By 1908 he had joined the Geo-Physical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years, serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I, his contributions were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947, he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society. In his honor, the Society established The Robert B. Sosman Award, "the highest recognition of scientific accomplishment given by the Basic Science Division. in recognition of outstanding achievement in basic science of an area that results in a significant impact to the field of ceramics.".
