Insurgency in Northeast India is expected to be useful to all those who are involved in the peace processes in Northeast India because a problem of its magnitude cannot be solved without understanding the root causes. The book brings into focus that there is nothing like a north eastern insurgency and that there are several autonomous or isolated insurgencies militancies and other movements in different parts and ethnic areas of the region which have created an atmosphere of turmoil or an insurgent situation for the entire region. The roots of the problem vary from secessionism to demands for state or sub state within India or regional autonomy for ethnic areas within the states or protection of ethnic areas within the states or protection of ethnic and cultural identities. The economic and infrastructural backwardness unemployment and lack of opportunities seemed to be common causes in almost all cases. The single common cause that is emphasized most is the indifferent attitude of the central government which failed tackle the problem of insurgency at its initial stage and allowed the dominant majority to threaten the cultural identity of the ethnic and linguistic minorities and is responsible for economic and infrastructural backwardness of the region unemployment and lack of opportunities frustration and disappointment of the youths a sense of deprivation in the masses ethnic discrimination insecurity and threatened identity among the minorities and many other related problems. The study recommends that each insurgency or militancy or movement should be taken up separately and its root causes identified to uproot those and to dawn peace in the region. 136 pp.

Is Social Science A Science emerges from a Brain Storming Session (BSS) on the subject organized by the North Eastern Regional Centre of the Indian Council of Social Science Research involving a group of social scientists at the North Eastern Hill University Shillong. The scholars from sociology political science history economics geography anthropology and philosophy freely expressed themselves on the issue from the perspectives of their respective disciplines. The arguments brought out that the answer whether the social science is a science or not would largely depend on how science and social science are defined the dominant view in the entire discourse though insisted that the social science is accepted for a long time as a science and there is hardly any justification in reopening to issue. 120 pp.

Participants of the Brainstorming Session. Index. Development Strategies for Barak Valley (Assam) emerges from a Brainstorming Session on Development Strategies for Barak Valley Constraints and Prospects organized by the Institute of Northeast India Studies in collaboration with the Department of Economics Assam University Silchar on 29 April 2008. The objective of the discourse was to focus on the problems and prospects of economic development and more importantly the appropriate strategies for Barak Valley which consists of three districts viz. Cachar Hailakandi and Karimganj and is economically one of the most backward parts of the country. Sandwiched between the hills on three sides and the international boundary with Bangladesh on the fourth this predominantly Bengali speaking area is geographically historically and culturally a distinct region within the State of Assam. Although its economy was shattered by the partition of India in 1947 when the major part of the valley went to East Pakistan and its road rail and waterways to the rest of the country were snapped away the governments at the centre and of the state have not so far shown any visible concern for rebuilding the economy of the valley through any special scheme or programme which the area more than deserved. The group of intellectuals involved in the brainstorming session therefore endeavoured to bring into focus the plight of more than three million people who live in the valley and to suggest appropriate strategies for its economic development. 316 pp.
