Title continues: " . apelles communement les Jardins de Plaisance et de Proprete, Composees de Parterres, de Bosquets, de Boulingrins, &c." - Wide large 8vo. - (8),293,(11) pp. - Contemporary mottled calf, spine with 5 raised bands, title and floral decorations in gilt (bottom of spine and front cover somewhat damaged). - Interior and plates very fine. - With 38 double plates (4 of them folding). - This book, which integrated the methods of Le Notre into a comprehensive system, is considered to be the foremost authority on formal gardens. - The book was actually written by D'Argenville, under the supervision of the architect Le Blond, whose designs were engraved by Mariette.

Leather binding is worn with heavy bumping at corners resulting in loss of leather.This book has 29 folded copperplate illustrations and 16 tri fold plates . SEE PHOTOS The book appears to be professionally restored with binding tape at inner hinges and two copperplate illustration repaired with rice paper. All pages are slightly wavey with tanning at edges. The first eight pages and the table of contents are foxed.There is a water stain that does not affect the text at the top corners of the pages. A modern bookplate is foung on the frist paste down endpaper.

First French edition, 1709 with this copy's text and plates based on the 1722 edition, which was incorrectly credited solely to the artist responsible for the illustrations, Alexandre Le Blond. First German edition, Augsburg, 1731. This work elaborates on the basics of horticulture, planting a garden, selecting, planting and caring for the various plants, as well as the use of water features and fountains. The copper engraved plates present numerous illustrations of these topics -- layouts of various gardens and parks with flower beds, trellises, pools. stairs and terraces. Part of plate prior to page 187 colored. MILLARD III, 27. Raised bands, black leather spine label printed in gilt. Interior contents generally clean. Contemporary full mottled calf. Very good. Contemporary full speckled calf Cambridge style binding, rectangular front and back cover panels decorated in blind and corners. Very good.

Berlin 3464 (jew. erste dt. Ausg. 1731). - Eingebunden sind 34 Blätter mit Tafeln, davon 32 gefaltet. Nach Bezeichnung im Band beinhalten 5 davon je zwei Tafeln auf einem Blatt, so dass insg. 39 Tafeln vorliegen (entspricht dem Exemplar im VD18, Digitalisat der UB Freiburg). - Hauptwerk des vielseitigen Gelehrten Dezallier (1680-1765), der u. a. als Autor für Diderots Enzyklopädie tätig war. Die franz. Originalausgabe "La théorie et la pratique du jardinage" (EA 1709, anonym) erschien später meist unter dem Namen des Architekten Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond (1679-1719), so auch bei den Übersetzungen. Von ihm stammen die Tafeln und wohl auch einiges an fachlichem Inhalt: "It was written by d'Argenville the elder, under the instructions and supervision of the architect, J. B. A. Le Blond" (Fowler). - "Dezalliers Verdienst war es, mit seiner Publikation den immensen Erfahrungsschatz des. Gärtnerstabes um Le Nôtre. für ein breites Publikum gesichert zu haben" (Fiedler, Florian. Dezallier d'Argenville und seine Bedeutung für die moderne Gartendenkmalpflege. In: Die Gartenkunst des Barock. ICOMOS - Hefte des deutschen Nationalkomitees XXVIII. München, 1997, S. 159). Der Übersetzer Danreiter (1695-1760), war Architekt u. Hofgärtner in Salzburg. - Mit gest. Rokoko-Exlibris "KESLER" vom Nürnberger Künstler Adam Ludwig Wirsing (1733-1797): Im Vordergrund Merkur, ein Wappen haltend, dahinter Schiffe und eine stilisierte Hafenstadt. - Schönes Exemplar. Bezugspapier auf den Deckeln etwas beschabt. Vorsätze am Rand blass leimschattig, ansonsten sehr sauber.
