A solid, tight and strong early printing of Du Bois' classic, and cornerstone of African-American literature. Good only; with all flaws noted.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. Albert Saifer. Philadelphia. 746 pages. First edition thus. This is the uncommon Albert Saifer printing; with no date printed on the copyright page other than 1935. This edition was reprinted by arrangement of Harcourt Brace & Co. who owned the publishing rights up until 1960; putting the printing of this book somewhere between 1935 and 1959. Book is tight and clean; quality-made with sturdy sewn binding. Black panels are bright and clean, silver titles on backstrip are bright. Pages lay tight and undisturbed; seemingly in unread condition. 3 very small vintage ink splashes on bottom page edges; book is about near fine. This book comes from the personal collection of noted doctor, professor and psychoanalyst Dr. Henry Guze; founder of The American Academy of Psychotherapists and the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis and co?founder and former president of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex. His signature and ownership stamp is on the front free endpaper. This title is considered to be Du Bois' magnum opus. He challenged the common belief at the time that blacks were responsible for the failures of the Reconstruction Era. He picks apart slavery, post Civil War America and the rise of Jim Crow. This title is considered the foundational text of corrective African American historiography. A monumental title that is scarce in collectible condition as vintage hardcovers of this title that still exist are either beaten-down, or badly scarred with library markings. Offered here is a nice exception in about near-fine condition.

Later edition of this landmark work. Octavo, original black cloth over patterned boards, illustrated with musical notations. Signed by the author on the half-title page, "W.E.B. Du Bois March 18, 1957." In fine condition. The Souls of Black Folk is a classic work of American literature by W. E. B. Du Bois. It is a seminal work in the history of sociology, and a cornerstone of African-American literary history. To develop this groundbreaking work, Du Bois drew from his own experiences as an African-American in the American society. Outside of its notable relevance in African-American history, The Souls of Black Folk also holds an important place in social science as one of the early works in the field of sociology.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. First edition. Octavo. Black cloth gilt. Contemporary review of the book (April 15, 1903) from the *Boston Evening Transcript* laid in and slightly offset on the endpapers, with a small pinhole where it was affixed, bottom corners a bit bumped, short tear on one leaf (p.253-254), but still a spine-bright, very good or better copy lacking the very rare dust jacket. A much sought-after classic of American literature, and almost certainly the most important book by one of the most historically important African-Americans. *The Souls of Black Folk* has remained in print since its original publication, but has become rare in the first edition. Despite a few modest flaws, this is one of the better copies we've encountered in the last few decades. *Blockson 101* #52.
