Softcover. Etat : Very Good. First Edition. [covers a bit edgeworn, mostly along spine, light fading/rubbing to upper sections of front cover]. Trade PB (cartoon drawings) Substitute "Hounds" (or better yet, "Pigs") in the title, and you'd be closer to the mark: pretty much the entire book is devoted to the myriad ways in which the "working girls" of the world can expect to be sexually harassed by, well, nearly every single man they allow to get anywhere near them -- at work, at home, or in public. Pitched as "full of sharp wit and good humor," the book definitely has plenty of those, but on another level it's like a horror show in its casual acceptance that that's just the way things are, honey, so you'd better learn to deal with it. Was Dorothy Bond really "America's No. 1 Woman Cartoonist," as the cover blurb would have it, and the "Champion of the Working Girl" (ditto), attested to by her "thousands of fan letters"? On the first claim, one can only observe that in 1950 there wasn't a hell of a lot of competition for that title (although quite a few votes might go to Helen Hokinson). On the second claim, that appellation was the subtitle of a newspaper comic strip she produced for a time in the late 1940s entitled "Chlorine," about an office secretary, which in turn was an offshoot of an earlier strip called "The Ladies." Despite the somewhat depressing nature of the theme (to modern eyes, anyway), it has to be noted that most of the author's sarcastic barbs are aimed straight at the men she depicts -- and they hit their mark.

These cartoons good-naturedly satirize the harried life of the World War II-era government clerk. The women portrayed by Bond in Government Gertie are overworked, bothered by their bosses, rushing to catch the train, stressed by their friendships and their relationships with their mothers, and stumbling in to work in the morning after a long night out. BondÕs irreverent humor is obvious in every page, especially in her parody profiles of the types of women one finds working in clerk positions, including ÒThe Shy Timid One Ñ Spends all day running around agreeing with everyone Ð when she gets home at night she horsewhips her old mother.Ó Dorothy Anne Peterson Bond (1905 Ð 1982) was a newspaper cartoonist born in the United States to Hungarian immigrant parents. Her cartoons were inspired by her work as the secretary for a furnace manufacturer and, during World War II, as the secretary for a Navy admiral. She self-published the cartoon book series Life with the Army (1943), under the pseudonym ÒNavy Nora,Ó as well as the book Office Daze! (1945), which further lampooned the life of the working girl. Bond also illustrated the comic strips The Ladies, Chlorine, and Champion of the Working Girl, whose titular character was based on her own real-life secretary Dee Mulvey. 8 x 5 in. [64] pp. Illustrated on every page with Dorothy BondÕs cartoons. ÒDedicated with sincere admiration to that perfectly swell girl Ð THE GOVERNMENT CLERK.Ó Original paper wrappers printed in black and red. Some chipping to edges of wrappers. Uniform toning to first and last leaf, but otherwise quite clean. A very good copy of a rare and fragile item. First edition, third printing. First printed in September 1944. The second printing was issued in October of 1944 and the third in November of the same year. OCLC records only three copies: San Francisco PL, the Smithsonian, and Michigan State. It is unclear which printing is held by these institutions. Robbins, Trina and Catherine Yronwode. Women and the Comics (1985).
