8vo (160 x 227). 634 pp. Blue cloth titled in gilt on spine. First edition: one of only 1,160 illegally printed copies in Russian of the novel which won Boris Pasternak (1890-1960) the Nobel Prize. These were published by Mouton in the Netherlands - though they feature the Feltrinelli imprint - and are issued in their trademark, nondescript blue cloth. The publication in Russian was facilitated by the CIA as part of an effort to embarass and ultimately to undermine the USSR, and several hundred copies were distributed via the Vatican's stall at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. - The journey to a rushed publication started two years previously in the USSR. After having been rejected by the literary monthly Novy Mir for not adhering to socialist realism, the manuscript for Doctor Zhivago was smuggled out of Soviet Russia by the Italian journalist Sergio d'Angelo and published by the Italian communist Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, an act for which Feltrinelli later claimed that the Italian communist party revoked his membership. Feltrinelli in fact published an Italian translation first, which became an international sensation and was subsequently followed by numerous other translations. However, to win a Nobel Prize, it was generally understood that an author must have been published in the original language of his manuscript. With Pasternak an acknowledged favourite for 1958, the pressure was on. Feltrinelli managed to get his imprint on most or all of the Mouton copies, as seen on this volume, thus cementing his name as the publisher of the work which was expected to win that year's Nobel Prize. - John Maury, chief of the CIA's Soviet Russia division, recognized the novel as "the most heretical literary work by a Soviet author since Stalin's death". Perhaps the novel's greatest champion in America was the critic Edmund Wilson, who in The New Yorker described it as "one of the very great books of our time [.] a great act of faith in art and in the human spirit". Pasternak was denounced in Russia as being "anti-Soviet", and the pressure only increased after he was named winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958, which he was forced to refuse in order to avoid deportation. - In exceptionally fine condition. - Cf. First edition of Pasternak's first collection of poetry --- Rare first edition of the Nobel's winner's first book, one of 200 copies. When 'Bliznets v tuchakh' came out on the cusp of 1914, the Russian critics, especially the futurists led by Vladimir Mayakovsky, were sceptical. An ascetic looking cover (Pasternak refused to add any illustrations, which would appear in his later collections), and a preface by the then little known poet and friend of Pasternak Nikolai Aseev: the futurists labelled the whole project as 'sucking on a squeezed out lemon and nibbling on tiny sugar crumbs' ('The First Magazine of the Russian Futurists'). Valerii Briusov, the maître of the Russian poetry, perceived, however, the birth of something big in Pasternak's volume, the promise of the writer's future successes. 'Bliznets' formally opens Pasternak's career in literature: having searched for his true vocation for many years, first training as a musician, and then as a philosopher in Marburg, Germany, he finally accepts his calling as a ground-breaking poet. In his preface to the volume, Aseev presents Pasternak as a knight with a flaming sword, whose poetry will break 'the entranced silence of the Russian Symbolism'. Poems in 'Bliznets' appear without dates of composition, which was unusual for Russian poetry collections of the time. Nevertheless, it is possible to establish that scenes of the countryside (poems II, XVIII) were inspired by Pasternak's life at the estate Molodi outside Moscow during summer 1913 - the last peaceful summer of the tsarist Russia. In August 1913 Pasternak came back to Moscow, where he met Nadezhda Sinyakova and fell in love with her: it is likely that some of the love poems in 'Bliznets' are addressed to her ('Vse nadenut segodnia pal'to'; 'Grust' moya, kak plennaya serbka'). In 1912 Pasternak and his family visited Venice, which inspired his poem about the city, where palaces are torn from the ground 'like a strip of unravelled lace' ('Venetsia'). 'Bliznets' is exploring an array of poetic possibilities and directions. The opening poem, 'Edem', declares an allegiance to the poetic tradition, according to which poetry is a divine matter. The poem that follows, 'Lesnoye', is more innovative, with its naturalistic images of trees, mosses and 'moist grass'. Poem III is probably the first example of Pasternak's unique poetic voice a blend of visual household details seen in the revelatory emotive key: 'Mne snilas' osen' v polusvete stekol'. Accused by the futurists of excessive mannerism, Pasternak, in fact, was attempting the seemingly impossible applying poetry to the modern, increasingly urban and prosaic, life. In some poems in 'Bliznets' he succeeds, for example, when describing the telephone conversation between the two lovers in 'Nochnoe panno': the quiet suburbs by the motorway are able to communicate with the lights of the city centre, as the speaker reaches for his lover through the celluloid of the phone's receiver. In many of the poems in 'Bliznets', it is their opening lines that are most striking: they possess a quality of independent one-line exposures, the power and the beauty of a stand-alone poem. This, and the musicality of Pasternak's first book of poetry, are the main features of 'Bliznets'. An excellent example in fresh original wrappers. It is very rare to find examples of this edition in such a fresh, untouched condition, with the genuine publisher's wrappers and without tears, loss, repairs or added binding. Provenance: A. First edition, one of only 200 copies; small 4to (17 x 12.7 cm); foreword by Nikolai Assev, original printed wrappers, stains to covers, cover detached from spine, text block detached from covers, without any restoration, in a custom make black morocco and cloth clamshell box, text in gilt to spine. Scarce collection of poems by one of Russia's most famous literary figures, it was only after Bliznets v tuchakh was published that Pasternak considered writing as a serious career. Both the author and his friend Nikolai Aseev who wrote the preface were relatively unknown at the time and the book was not well received by Maykovsky or the First Journal of Russian Futurists. Pasternak later said that of this criticism that 'everything I did a long time ago was unacceptably revolutionary, overturning all my contemporaries' conceptions of poetry'.

In 1957, Italian publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli arranged for the novel to be smuggled out of the Soviet Union by Sergio D'Angelo. Despite desperate efforts by the Union of Soviet Writers to prevent its publication, Feltrinelli published an Italian translation of the book in November 1957. So great was the demand that Feltrinelli was able to license translation rights into eighteen different languages well in advance of the novel's publication. The Communist Party of Italy expelled Feltrinelli from their membership in retaliation for his role in the publication of a novel they felt was critical of communism (Wikipedia). The Soviet campaign against the no had the opposite effect as it became a sensation throughout the non-communist world which included spending 26 weeks atop the New York Times best-seller list. Years later, Italian film producer Carlo Ponti convinced MGM to purchase the rights to the Vogel from Feltrinelli for $450,000 USD. The David Lean directed film was released in 1965 to great success and remains one of the highest grossing films of all time. Now housed in an Oatmeal colored custom cloth clamshell box.

First edition in Russian of Pasternak's epic, its international success helping to cement his Nobel Prize win of the same year. The true first edition of DOCTOR ZHIVAGO was published not in Boris Pasternak's native Russian, but in Italian. Pasternak's original manuscript was famously smuggled out of Russia into the hands of Milanese publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli after it was rejected from the NOVY MIR literary journal for its perceived anti-Soviet sentiment. Hoping to use the 1958 Brussels Exposition as an opportunity to undermine the Soviets, the CIA paid Dutch publisher Mouton to quickly print "over a thousand" essentially pirated copies. American agents then used the Vatican City pavilion at the Exposition to surreptitiously circulate the CIA-sponsored edition. Fearing official retribution, many of the Russians who received copies "ripp[ed] off the cover, divid[ed] the pages, and stuff[ed] them in their pockets to make them easier to hide" (Finn and Couvée). For this reason - as well as the fact that the copies that made it back to Russia "were passed from hand to hand as avidly as a copy of FANNY HILL in a college dormitory" - the Mouton edition rarely appears on the market (Finn and Couvée). Mouton, however, published in Italian from an uncorrected manuscript, much to Pasternak's chagrin; "it abounds with errata," he complained in a letter to Feltrinelli (Finn and Couvée). The present "Feltrinelli Edition," however, met his high standards and introduced Pasternak's classic novel in his native tongue. In 1965 the tale also became a classic of cinema, when the Hollywood adaptation by David Lean and Robert Bolt and starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie became one of the highest-grossing films of the year. When in the summer before the 1917 October Revolution Boris Pasternak wrote My Sister Life, it aroused wild enthusiasm and established him as a genius of Russian poetry. As brilliant, is this English translation by the poet, Mark Rudman. In the original Russian the poems were strictly rhythmical and written mostly in a classical meter. Most of them rhyme. Rudman has translated them into free verse, paralleling Pasternak s rhythm and retaining his stanzas. Boris Pasternak (1890-1960) is perhaps best known in the English-speaking world for his novel, "Doctor Zhivago" - it was smuggled out of the USSR and published in Milan in 1957, earning Pasternak the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. This work, "My Sister - Life", is his first published collection of poems and is considered one of the most influential collections ever published in the Russian language. Controversial when it was first published five years after the October Revolution of 1917, the revolutionary spirit pervades the poems - not in the political sense but in the spirit of beginning again. The first edition in Russian after the Nobel Prize award --- The first legal Russian edition of the famous novel, by "one of the great modern masters of Russian literature" (Terras). A lovely copy of the first printing. Pasternak considered Doktor Zhivago his magnum opus, and confident that it would not appear in print in his homeland, he managed to submit one of his manuscripts to the Milan publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli in May 1956. Despite persistent attempts by the Soviet government and the Italian Communist party to prevent the publication, Feltrinelli issued the novel in Italian in November 1957. An immediate bestseller, it was translated into 24 languages within two years; in October 1958 Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize "for his significant contribution to modern literature and to the great tradition of Russian prose". The history of the novel's publication in Russian is however peculiarly tangled and some confusion often reigns in the sequence of the earliest Russian editions: all appeared within less than one year. The CIA illegally printed the novel in Russian in order to distribute it to the Soviet delegation at the World Fair in Brussels in September-October 1958. The operation however almost failed because of the CIA's publishing partner Felix Morrow, a publisher and a former opera singer, who "had made a very New York journey from Communist to Trotskyite to willing Cold Warrior for the CIA" (Finn and Couvée, here and below). In June 1958, Morrow was requested to prepare the manuscript of Doctor Zhivago for publication and to investigate where it could be printed in Europe: the involvement of the US had to be concealed. A few weeks later, the CIA discovered that Morrow not only did not succeed in finding any European publishers but discussed the secret operation with outsiders, including the University of Michigan director Fred Wieck with whom he made arrangements to publish the book in the US. The CIA warned the University of Michigan Press about Feltrinelli's imminent lawsuits to "anyone publishing the book in Russian" but received the University's lawyers' response that "no one held the rights to the Russian-language edition of the novel for the United States because there was no treaty with the Soviet Union of copyright". The present Michigan edition of Doctor Zhivago therefore had all the chances to be the very first Russian edition of the famous novel. The CIA and the Soviet Russia Division however managed to convince the president of the University, Harlan Hatcher, to wait until the novel appears in Europe because of "the important factors of protecting liaison services with other agencies involved", the greater "psychological impact upon Soviet readers" if the work comes out in Europe, and moreover, Pasternak's personal request to not publish the novel in the US for his own safety. The first Russian edition, sponsored by the CIA, was published at Mouton Press in The Hague with Feltrinelli's fake imprint in early September 1958. Unaware of the CIA-Mouton operation, Feltrinelli was furious and ready to start a legal trial but soon was able to settle the case. Shortly after, he faced another challenge: in October 1958, the University of Michigan Press announced the preparation of its edition of Doctor Zhivago. Feltrinelli, who "believed he had exclusive world rights to the novel, including in Russian, because the novel was not published in the Soviet Union", attempted to ban this publication as well. The University responded that they "were extending a service to students and scholars by refusing to be bound by Feltrinelli's effort to 'extend worldwide censorship of the Soviet writers' union'". The University however agreed to compromise and secured a licence for Michigan from Feltrinelli; in January 1959 this first legal Russian edition (based on the CIA proof obtained from Morrow) was published in Ann Arbour, Michigan. Although Feltrinelli rushed to publish his first Russian edition before Michigan, it only came out two months later, in March 1959, followed by another CIA-backed edition, this time in small format, printed in May 1959 in Washington DC with an imprint of a nonexistent publisher "Société d'Edition et d'Impression Mondiale" in Paris. My Sister Life was written in the summer before the 1917 October Revolution, it was very well received and established him as a genius of Russian poetry. The English translation was done by Mark Rudman. The acclaimed Russian born artist, Yuro Kuyper provides 6 etchings for the publication, printed on Hannemule paper in Paris. The paper used for the text was hand-made by H. M. P. Mill in Connecticut to resemble the sort of stock produced in 1920's Russia, even incorporating bits of Russain newspapers with rags and cotton pulp. The book is in near fine condition, with the only defect being some sunning to the spinea. The slipcase in VG or better, showing some sunning. The book is signed by Yuri Kuyper and this copy is #212 of 250. The original LEC invoice for $4000 laid in; Etching; Folio 13" - 23" tall; Signed by Illustrator.

First edition in English of the work which garnered Pasternak the Nobel Prize in literature. Octavo, bound in full crushed levant morocco by the Harcourt Bindery with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt-ruled inner dentelles stamp-signed by the Harcourt Bindery, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Translated by Max Hayward and Manya Harari. In his 1958 New Yorker review, Edmund Wilson called the novel "one of the very great books of our time Doctor Zhivago will, I believe, come to stand as one of the great events in man s literary and moral history." It was not allowed to appear in the Soviet Union until 1987, twenty-seven years after the author s death. The novel was made into a film by David Lean in 1965, and since then has twice been adapted for television, most recently as a miniseries for Russian TV in 2006.

Nikoloz Baratashvili (1817 1845) is 'the greatest of the Georgian Romantic poets [and] one of the first Georgians to fire a modern nationalism with European Romanticism He died of malaria, unmourned and unpublished. His influence was long delayed, until the Georgian literary journals were established. Posthumously, as his lyrics were rediscovered by the next generation and published between 1861 and 1876, he came to be idolized: his longest poem, the historical Fate of Georgia (1839), which he wrote at the age of 22, became famous as one of the most inspiring and articulate laments for his or any other crushed country, while Merani (1842) fascinated later Georgian poets as a mystic, apocalyptic vision of the future' (Rayfield, The Literature of Georgia, p. 156).
