The original manuscript was written in Dutch, translated into French and first published in Philadelphia in 1797-8. Braam Houckgeest was a Dutch-American merchant who had served as a supercargo for the Dutch East India Company in Canton and Macao. He accompanied the embassy to China in 1794-5 together with Isaac Titsingh and Chrétien-Louis-Joseph de Guignes. Of the three accounts dealing with the embassy, Braam Houckgeest's work is considered the most extensive and also the most interesting. (Löwendahl). His account contains a detailed and accurate description of several parts of China not previously visited by Europeans. Cordier BS 2351. See Löwendahl 700.
