Illustrated. (illustrateur). Very Good (covers nice & bright; contents clean & tight); very minor wear (tiny tear) d/j. A very nice copy of a scarce book! Tall 8vo., brick-colored cloth in dust jacket; 395 pages Very scarce first edition. Signed by Lyman Beecher Brooks on the front endpaper: "Lyman B. Brooks. 11/6/83" on the front endpaper. Also, laid in is an invitation to a book signing by Brooks at the Omni International Hotel in Norfolk, Va. on Nov. 6, 1983. Lyman Beecher Brooks [1910-1984] was the first President of Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia. Norfolk State University (NSU) is a public historically black university. In 1938, Brooks became Director of the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University (now Norfolk State University). During his thirty-seven-year career as the director, provost and president of the college from 1938 to 1975, he helped build the school from a three-classroom junior college with five teachers to an eighteen-building campus with a faculty and staff of 375 and 6,300 students. Dr. Brooks' leadership helped the college achieve numerous milestones. In 1972 a new library was completed and named the Lyman Beecher Brooks Library in honor of his many accomplishments. With the pencil signature & notation on the front pastedown: "Property of Samuel R. Wilson Jr." There is a Samuel Ross Wilson mentioned in the book's Index. A very scarce book, especially signed by Brooks.
