Black and white illustrated frontispiece, showing the author as a pilgrim to Mecca. The text is illustrated with reproductions of contemporary black and white illustrations. Illustrated paperback binding with black coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Sir Richard Burton was one of the great traveller-explorers of the 19th century, if not history. Quoting from the rear panel (of volume II) " . it is his pilgrimage in 1853 to Mecca and Medina and the most sacrosanct shrines of Islam that Burton is best known  and for his celebrated book that recorded his experiences during the journey. Successfully posing as a wandering dervish, he gained admittance to the holy Kaabah and to the Tomb of the Phrphet at Medina and participated in all the rituals of the Hadj (pilgrimage)." A crisp, basically clean copy in marroon boards with gilt lettering, "Bohn's Libraries" stated at foot of spine and on half-title page. Illustrated with tissue-covered frontispiece and glossy plates drawn by Burton's wife. Includes a fold-out map of the Prophet's Mosque at Meccah. Pages are still uncut. A terrific copy of this Volume Two only.

The two volume Memorial Edition, edited by Burton's wife Isabel, handsomely rebound in mid-20th century fine binding of half black morocco over dark green crushed morocco boards, gilt lettering and decorations back, tops dyed red. Near Fine, top edges a bit rubbed, initials E.P.L. bottom edges of page blocks, small stamp Edinburgh Libraries at verso of plates, small period bookplates at final page of text both volumes. All maps and plates present, Some edge wear and creasing at edges of fold-out map. Overall a quite lovely set that would grace any library. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
