520, VIII S. Erste deutsche Ausgabe. - Selten. - Henze I, 417 (Burton); Kainbacher 68; Ibrahim/Hilmy 111; Vgl. Embacher 60ff. - 1857 starteten Burton und Speke ihre Afrikaexpedition zur Lösung des Nilquellenrätsels. Im Februar 1858 entdeckte man den Tanganjika-See. Auf dem Rückweg blieb der erkrankte Burton in Tabora zurück, Speke hingegen drang weiter nach Norden vor und entdeckte Anfang August den Victoria-See, den er als Quellgewässer des Nils betrachtete. Spekes Annahme führte später zu heftigen Kontroversen mit Burton und um seine These zu bestätigen und das Nil-Problem endgültig zu lösen, startete Speke 1860 von Sansibar aus zu einer neuen Expedition, die er in Begleitung von James Augustus Grant antrat. Im Auftrag der Royal Geographic Society durchquerte man Ostafrika und drang bis zum Victoria-See vor, um diesen genauer zu untersuchen. Bei den mächtigen Wasserfällen am Nordufer des Sees erkannte Speke, dass der Weiße Nil tatsächlich aus dem Victoria-See entspringt. Zurückgekehrt nach Khartum, konnte er sein berühmtes Telegramm nach London senden: "The Nile is settled". - Einband etwas fleckig. Rücken fachmännisch hinterlegt (Orig.-Rücken sauber aufmontiert).
