Dust jacket is rubbed along the fold lines, has a 1 1/2" tear top of front spine fold, other small nicks and tears, and there are two short pieces of clear tape on blind side reinforcing two short tears. 145 pages with index and illustrations by Caudle.

Green cloth lettered in gilt. A nice clean copy in the pictorial dust jacket. Frontispiece and numerous illustrations. This copy has a clipped signature of Emily Murphy pasted to the front end paper, and is inscribed and signed in 1960 by Emily Murphy's daughter, Evelyn Gowan Murphy. Additionally, a short handwritten note from Evelyn Murphy, on her personalized stationery, is laid in.

This is a family association copy, inscribed by Murphy's daughter Kathleen on the front free endpaper "To John & Grace Fraser with the sincere affection of two of Emily Murphy's family Cleave [grand daughter] & Kathleen Kenwood / Edmonton December 1945. Additionally, above this inscription is pasted a piece of paper with Emily Murphy's actual signature dated Dec. 1903. Note that the printed dedication page is "To My Mother and Sister, and to Emily Murphy's Daughters". 355 pages with index plus 11 B&W plates (all present). Signed.

The book is dedicated "To My Mother And Sister, And To Emily Murphy's Daughters" Biography. Emily Murphy (1868 - 1933) was a Canadian women's rights activist. In 1910, she was the first woman appointed to the board of Edmonton Hospital. In 1916, she became the first woman magistrate in Canada, and in the British Empire. She was also appointed as Judge of the Juvenile Court of Edmonton, hence is sometimes referred to as Judge Murphy. She is best known for her contributions to Canadian feminism, specifically to the question of whether women were "persons" under Canadian law. Victory in this important legal case resulted in women being eligible to stand for election as well as confirming her own right to serve on the bench. She campaigned for the 1917 Dower Act, which established that a wife has a legal entitlement to one-third of her husband's estate. From 1913 to 1920, she was President of the Canadian Women's Press Club. She is honored with a statue on Parliament Hill, Ottawa.
