Hardcover. Etat : NF. Etat de la jaquette : VG+. Photos, Maps, Diagrams, Technical Drawings Etc (illustrateur). 1st. The sub-title to Norman Cameron's book, "The Railway Conquest of the Rimutakas," provides an indication that constructing a railway linking the NZ capital, Wellington, to the rich pastoral lands of the Wairarapa lying to the north, but over a range of rugged, steep, bush clad and difficult hill country battered by extremes of weather, including tempest scale winds, was no easy task. The author's account of the concept of the railway, its planning and surveying, its years of construction, are given detailed and comprehensive treatment in this fine book. Thoughts of providing a rail link from the port city of Wellington to the fertile hinterland on the other side of the Rimutaka Range emerged in the late 1850s. With political and economic hurdles to be crossed it was the 1870s before four possible routes for the line were examined, but a further survey produced the line of rail that was eventually adopted. When construction began short sections of the line were put out to contract with the project taken to the range summit over rugged, sometimes swampy terrain, requiring several substantial bridges, embankments and tunnels and by 1877 the line had reached the range summit. Meanwhile, laying the line from Masterton to the inland foot of the range had been progressed. It was the line from the summit to the Wairarapa link that was to provide the unique character of the railway with the excessively steep "Incline" section requiring the use of the Fell sytstem, which used specially designed locomotives with the track featuring an additional centre"rail" used to provide extra grip for ascending trains and breaking for those descending. The Rimutaka Fell system is said to have been only the second time it was used on an operating railway. The author has included full technical information of the working of that system, and of the many other rare features, plus mechanical and engineering required to complete the railway, which was opened to through traffic in November 1880. The line was closed 77 years later when the realigned railway through the Rimutaka deviation tunnel, more that two miles long. was complerted late in 1955. That project is also covered in the book, as is the shortlived only other "Fell" railway at Mt Cenis in the French Alps. Apart from the construction and operation of the Rimutaka line there are chapters on the Fell system as adopted for NZ, locomotives used on the Incline and other section of the rail, staions, signalling and train working, accidents and incidents, branch lines and sidings. Complementuing this detailed text material is an excellent selection of photographs, maps. locomotive design and technical drawings, tables, diagrams, time tables etc. "A Line of Railway" is printed on a high quality paper stock and the complete product is a fine example of the standard of publications presented by the NZ Railway and Locomative Society. First edition of 1976, 336 pages including extended index, illustrated throughout with b/w photos and numerous related images. Yellow hard covers with black titles and locomative decoration to the front board are NF, spine strip with black titles is lightly sunned, text block is NF with author's ink signature on title page, no other inscriptions. Pictorial DJ is VG+ with short tape repaired tear lower edge at the front flap fold, few other tiny tears. By Author.
