Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. "Encounter", founded in 1953 by poet Stephen Spender and author Irving Kristol, was a leading and influential English literary and cultural monthly magazine that covered the arts, literature, history and politics. Its contributors consisted of some of the leading intellectual and literary lights of the day. Melvin Lasky replaced Kristol as editor in 1958. Many suspected, but did not know, that the magazine was funded by the CIA; in part, because of this, Spender resigned as editor in 1967; the journal ceased publication in 1990. *********************************** This issue, Volume XL, No. 1, July 1958 (# 58) is packed with interesting content. It was the height of the Cold War, and leading off is a discussion of the nuclear arms race ("Or Bomb and Theirs"). Literature continued, and we see that tow well-respected poets contributed poems (Stevie Smith and Hayden Carruth); other pieces of literary creation, including literary criticism, are included. Erskine B. Childers writes on the "Impasse in the Holy Land" which seems to mirror the impasse the world is still witnessing. It's a fascinating issue. ************************************* TITLE : Encounter / ISSUE : Volume XL, Number 1 (# 58) / DATE : July 1958 / AUTHORS : Erskine Childers, Hayden Carruth, Stevie Smith, et al / EDITORS : Stephen Spender and Irving Kristol / PLACE : London / DETAILS : Monthly periodical; 96 pages; 7 1/8" x 10", printed wraps, glued. *********************************** CONTENTS :: Our Bomb and Theirs : The Nuclear Obsession - by R.
