Neu -Chirurgen wie Hieronymus Brunschwig und selbst Hans von Gerßdorf waren - trotz aller Neuerungen, mit denen sie die Entwicklung der Medizin vorangetrieben haben - noch wesentlich dem Mittelalter verpflichtet. Casserius dagegen gehörte einem neuen Zeitalter an, der Renaissance. Jede der großformatigen Tafeln kündet von einer genauen Kenntnis des menschlichen Körpers, die durch gründliche anatomische Studien erworben wurde. Um 1600 entschloss er sich, eine umfassende Anatomie zu verfassen, die er jedoch nie beendet hat. Glücklicherweise blieben die Radierungen, die er bei verschiedenen Künstlern in Auftrag gegeben hatte, erhalten. 11 Jahre nach seinem Tod erschienen 1627 insgesamt 97 Tafeln erstmals als Anhang zu einer Anatomie des Holländers Adriaan van der Spieghel (Spigelius). Etwa gleichzeitig wurden 9 weitere Tafeln unter dem Titel »De Formatu Foetu« gedruckt.
