A Sulpician priest, Cavelier accompanied his brother, Robert Cavelier de La Salle on his last expedition to the Mississippi territory, when he landed on the coast of Texas. A more complete contemporary account was provided by Henri Joutel in his Journal Historique published in 1713. "The manuscript, a rough draft of a report prepared for de Seignelay, Minister of Marine, is a confused account of events from July 1684 to Feb. 1687, broken off abruptly before La Salle s death."
