Hardcover. Etat : VG. No Jacket. Photos, Maps (illustrateur). 1st. When World War II broke out Max Horton was the Royal Navy's Flag Officer submarines. As a young officer in WWI he had distinguished himself in these "boats." In November 1942, with the rank of Admiral, he was appointed Commander in Chief of Western Aproaches, one of the most important Allied posts, the command being responsible for anti-U-boat operations and escorting all Atlantic convoys. He proved to be an inspired leader and played a vital role in winning the battle of the sea-lanes. He held the West Approaches commend until the war in Europe ended and completed his long association with the RN (from a naval cedet in 1898) when that appointment ended. He died in 1951. This excellent biography of this distinguished officer was written by a close naval associate, Rear-Admiral Chalmers.First edition of 1953, 302 pages including 12 appendices and index, b/w photo protrait frontis, 23 b/w photos, two maps. Blue hard covers with gilt front decoration and dulled gilt spine titles VG, with slight bump front top corner, internally excellent, no inscriptions.
