Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Arthur Hughes, Arthur Boyd Houghton & others (illustrateur). 1st Edition. Good Words for the Young, which has been described as 'one of the finest magazines ever aimed at youth' (Goldman, p.48), was a development from Good Words intended for a younger audience. Strahan's aim was to provide 'wholesome' literature for children at a time when mass-produced cheap reading material was being produced for the juvenile market; When "Good Words" was first published in 1869 its contributors included Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Kingsley, Jean Ingelow & George Macdonald, all of whom were established children's authors. Offered here is the run of 4 volumes 1869-1872. each volume has been rebound with bright blue boards, and Quarter leather, 5 raised bands on spine with titles in gilt to spine and to fron boards. new end papers have been added. A very smart and vanishingly scarce set.
