Heavier foxing and tanning to text block edges. Both hinges are cracked with exposed netting and cracks to guttering with exposed netting. Binding is loose. Boards have visible rubbing and noticeable bumping to corners and fair crushing to spine ends. Heavier rubbing to spine.

Unattractive but intact, this is a basically a Reading Copy. Prior owner inscription ffep. Text is complete and mostly clean, and binding is tight, but general appearance is flawed as follows: heavy staining and irregular fading to cover cloth; light rubbing to extremities; half-dollar size inkstain to fore edge block at second half of book, with some ink intruding into page margins; intermittent light foxing throughout, and with some heavier foxing and moderate staining to pp. 162-163; irregular creases to inside front cover/inside rear cover papers.

Decorative Boards. Etat : Good. Ratcliff, Ernest (illustrateur). First Edition. Pale blue boards with navy blue lettering and decorations to the spine and decorations to the front panel. Quite a bit of staining and discolouration to the boards. Damp staining to the outer edges of the front and rear panels. The spine is darkened with some browning. Stains in several places on the rear panel with some rubbing to the edges of the boards. Page edges browned with some spotting in places. Prize label from Bigton School in Shetland (1941) to front free endpaper - the recipient was my father. There is brown spotting to the title page and the facing page where the webbing is exposed. The binding is a little slack with a gap also showing at the rear endpapers. Three inch closed tear at the top of page 15. The pages are a little worn with light staining in places but are generally unmarked. Seven monochrome illustrations by Ernest Ratcliff. No jacket. First printing.
