1st prtg. 365p. In the original paper wraps. Lacks rear cover. Old stains on front wrapper and first few leaves; former owner's signature on front wrap; spine chipped and worn. Interior pages generally clean with only a few scattered traces of foxing. A scarce early American work on capital punishment. Issued in paper wraps in 1846, an era from which few softcover books have survived. Contains two works in one, the first being by Cheever and the second by Lewis. The Lewis essay is from a public debate held in Boston in 1843, and is in reply to J.L. O'Sullivan.
