Die Akan sind traditionell matriarchalisch organisiert, was sich ursprünglich auch erbrechtlich niedergeschlagen hat. So erbte bei dem Tod eines Familienvaters nicht seine Witwe und/oder seine Kinder dessen Vermögen, sondern seine Neffen, also die Kinder der Schwester des Verstorbenen. Dieses traditionelle Muster wird immer weniger anerkannt. Berühmte Elemente der Akankultur sind beispielsweise die Kente-Stoffe, die Adinkra-Kleidung oder die Goldgewichte der Ashanti. Frauen nehmen in der ghanaischen Kultur eine selbstbewusste prägende Stellung ein. Über 80 Prozent der ghanaischen Frauen sind neben ihrer eher traditionellen Rolle in den Familien erfolgreich beruflich tätig. Nicht selten haben sich Frauen als Händlerinnen, Näherinnen oder Köchinnen einer der vielen Straßenküchen ihre wirtschaftliche Selbstständigkeit erarbeitet. Oware ist ein weltweit bekanntes Brettspiel, das auch zu den ältesten bekannten Spielen gehört und bereits von frühester Kindheit von den Ghanaern gespielt wird. Da das Spiel notfalls auch in Erdmulden oder auf gezeichneten Papierkreisen gespielt werden kann, erfreut es sich einer großen Beliebtheit und ist zu einem Nationalspiel geworden. In Ghana gibt es neben der einfachen Oware-Brettform auch ein Spielbrett, das an einen Aschanti-Thron erinnert. Bedeutende Artefakte ghanaischer Kultur sind im National Museum in Accra zu sehen. Hier werden neben einer wertvollen Sammlung der Goldgewichte der Aschanti auch kostbare Kente-Stoffe ausgestellt.
