Pamphlet. Etat : Fair. [1838] James Pattie (London) 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches tall, with no wraps or covers, removed from a larger volume of English plays but separately paginated, with its own title page and engraved frontispiece engraving of actor John Reeve, who played the title role, 14 pp. All pages present but loose. Mild staining and foxing to frontispiece and title page. Otherwise, a good copy. Includes cast of characters, costume, stage directions and two pages of introductory remarks by 'Philo Dramaticus.' ~MMM~ A one-act farce by George Colman (1762-1836), known as 'the Younger,' English dramatist and miscellaneous writer, the son of George Colman 'the Elder' (1732-1794). Colman's comedies have been called 'a curious mixture of genuine comic force and sentimentality.' A collection of them was published (1827) in Paris, with a life of the author, by J.W. Lake. 'Sylvester Daggerwood' is said (in the introductory remarks to this script) to have been the first piece Colman wrote, originally played in 1795. This script is undated, but appears to have been produced in 1838, as the introductory remarks reference the death of actor John Reeve (1799-1838) - who played the titular role with some success - earlier in the year of publication.
