Full-Leather. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : No Dustjacket. Facsimile Edition. FINE HARDCOVER. Realdo Colombo (1500-1559) - De Re Anatomica, 1559. Colombo described the lung function, the pulmonary capillaries, and the alternans of cardiac systole and vessel distension. The first edition, second issue, was dedicated to Pope Pius IV. According to tradition, Columbo's De re anatomica was to have been illustrated by Michelangelo; however, Michelangelo left no drawings or any other evidence that he ever seriously considered the task, and we can only speculate as to what sort of artistic masterpiece might have been produced in such a collaboration. Instead Colombo's book was published without illustrations except for the woodcut title, which was directly inspired by that of Vesalius's Fabrica. The dangling right arm of the cadaver in the title-page woodcut recalls Donatello's bas-relief The Heart of the Miser. This book, entirely in Latin, is a 1983 reprint, printed in Brussels. The binding is in leather and is in flawless condition. The boards are slightly bowed. The text is clean, bright, clean and unmarked in unread condition. The book is a small 4vo, 12 1/2" x 8 3/4" There are 169 pages with index. No other known copies of this edition are available for purchase. Book is from the private collection of the owner/seller. Size: 8.5 x 12.5".
