Magazine / Périodique Edition originale
Soft cover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Magazine size about 11 1/2 by 16 inches with some 32 pages. Bound in illustrated wraps. This issue notable for the interview with Captain Jack Crawford, one of the best known 'Wild West' characters of his day. Probably best known as a 'poet cowboy' he was a Scout for the army, friend of Buffalo Bill, teller of tales, teetotaler (almost unknown trait in those times), newspaperman, and much else. Another article by Margaret Sangster, 'The Story Of Christodora House', tells of that New York institution. Much else of course. A very scarce issue of this seldom seen magazine. The Jack Crawford interview is of particular importance in the Western Americana field. Covers separated at spine edge and tape repaired; edges worn, chipped and with tiny tears; couple of page edge tears; other wear. A well used copy. GOOD.

Broadside. Printing/type to recto only. 10-15/16" x 8-7-16" Typed poem with "Copy" noted in manuscript beneath the letterhead, though nevertheless presumed original to the occasion. The poem is addressed to William and Mrs. I. Schaffer from "Your Broncho Friend of the Camp and the Trail, J.W. Crawford 'Capt. Jack.'" Crawford and the Schaffers apparently met and spent time together at Yama Farms. The poem consists of two octaves, and begins, "To a pair of Happy Lovers, / Whom I met at Yama Farms / Who are dead in love with Lovers, / Of Old Mother Nature's charms . . . " We presume that the author is "Poet Scout" John Wallace "Captain Jack" Crawford. Crawford was a soldier and ranger in the West during the Civil War, a failed miner, a showman in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show (until 1877, when he accidentally shot himself in the groin), and an eventual lecturer and cowboy poet at events around the country; he died in New York in 1917. Yama Farms was a popular Japanese-inspired resort in Ulster County, New York, from 1903 to 1938. It hosted, among others, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, John Burroughs, Harvey Firestone, Rabindranath Tagore, and many other industrialists, financiers, influential members of New York society, literati, etc. Fold lines, few pin holes to upper corner. VG+. Pale blue laid linen paper, with watermark. Printed blue Yama Farms letterhead, typed poem.

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Laughlin, Sara (illustrateur). Limited Edition. Oblong 12mo is 7 1/2" by 11 1/2". This is Number 151 of a first edition limited to 250. The binding is designed by Diana Bynum and has a brown cloth spine strip made of awning canvas, light brown sketchbook cardboard covers. The text is set in Goudy Light and printed on folded Nideggen paper, with Fabriano Ingres fot the endpapers. The poem was inspired by an accidental meeting of mistaken identity in 1882, when Crawford set out to meet General E.A. Carr to escort him to Fort Craig. He mistakenly introduced himself to Albert A. Pope, who owned Pope Manufacturing, a manufaturer of bycycles. It turns out Pope and Crawford had met in the past when Pope assisted Crawford when he was wounded on the battlefield during the civil war. He wrote this poem at Pope's request for The Boston Bicycle Club, where it was well received, and he read it frequently from then on. Illustrated with sepia toned drawings. Unpaginated. Poetry, Storytelling, New Mexico, History, Captain Jack, Limited Edition, Frontier, Southwest, Storytellers and old west characters. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

First edition.Though 'Vol. 1" appears on the spine, we have found no evidence that any subsequent volumes were ever published.Inscribed in ink on the front endpaper by John Wallace "Captain Jack" Crawford with an original 20-line manuscript poem, signed "J.W. Crawford ('Capt. Jack') New Year 1911".Known as the Poet Scout, John Wallace "Captain Jack" Crawford (1847-1917) was a civilian scout with the 5th Cavalry Regiment during the Great Sioux War of 1876. He joined Brig. General George Crook's command after Custer's defeat and death at Little Big Horn and served as war correspondent for the Omaha Bee. Routinely carrying dispatches along the highly perilous route of 400 miles to Fort Fetterman, he is remembered by his friend Buffalo Bill Cody for delivering not only a letter from General Sheridan but also a full bottle of whiskey. It was, however, his daring 350 mile ride to deliver news to the New York Herald of General George Crook's victory over Chief American Horse at the Battle of Slim Buttes that made him a national celebrity. Subsequently scouting in New Mexico, he then served as a special agent for the U.S. Justice Department for four years before taking to the lecture circuit, gaining in popularity as the "Poet Scout" entertaining audiences of thousands in music halls and on stages throughout the country.
