Tabloid Newspaper. Etat : Very Good+. Hans-George Rauch, Walt Crowley (illustrateur). First Printing. Tabloid printed on newsprint measuring 11.5 x 15 inches. Pp. 24 including covers. Covers and centerfold printed in color. Very light age-toning to edges, else a bright, presentable copy. A 1969 issue of the Seattle underground bi-weekly (that transitioned to a weekly later that year) with a full page Walt Crowley comic, an article on a Seattle police raid of the Rivoli Theater in which films were confiscated, a Paul Dorpat opinion piece on "The Word Made Flesh and the Politics of Pot," and featuring ads for Jimi Hendrix at the Seattle Center Coliseum with Fat Mattress opening, and Dr. Benjamin Spock at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. In late spring 1967, Helix joined a burgeoning underground press then including groundbreaking alternative papers the East Village Other, the Los Angeles Free Press, the Fifth Estate and the Berkeley Barb. Founded by Paul Sawyer, Paul Dorpat and Lorenzo Milam, it sprang from their intellectual fervor at the Free University, an alternative thinktank they also founded. Eventually star-illustrator Walt Crowley assumed editorship. A pebble in the shoe of Seattle establishment, the "hip rag" brought attention to civic injustice by rallying its youthful readership to activism. The apogee of that effort followed the 1970 killing of students at Kent State: over the course of May 5-8, Helix organized protests that blocked US Interstate 5 while marching between the University District and rallies at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Seattle. This issue is housed in a removable, clear sleeve with an acid-free backing. .

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. No Dust Jacket. Large 8vo. pp xxi, 394, [4]. Original publisherÕs black cloth, lettered gilt at spine. Illustrated in b/w throughout. Aleister Crowley's copy with a note on the first blank in his hand in pencil 'Aleister Crowley 1906 bought at the request of Oscar Eckenstein.' A rarity from the Great Beast's little known mountaineering years. Eckenstein, son of an exiled German Jew and and English woman was Crowley's friend and main climbing partner, although he usually preferred to climb alone reckoning it was safer. This was a practice condemned by the Abrahams.Eckenstein was highly eccentric and something of a philosopher. He shared with Crowleya great disdain for the Alpine Club. Crowley said of him 'Eckstein had all the civilized qualities and I all the savage ones.' Eckensteiin is mentioned in the text of the book 10 times. AC has annotated about 60 pages with about 250 words all in pencil, also marginal linings and exclamation marks and short notes such as 'Shit!' 'Good God!' 'by what ass" 'turd-like nature.' 'disgusting beast!' The tone of Crowley's numerous annotations is humorous, mocking , sarcastic and critical-- much of it aimed at the Abrahams timidity and lack of the spirit of adventure, also correcting facts. Crowley writes on the verso of the front blank-- 'Bernard Shaw has remarked that the Jew will always become leader by his brains and inagination. There is no disputing the quality of Messrs Abrahams imagination.' He refers to a local climbing handbook to the area as being more accurate and better. Eckenstein although he is treated flatteringly in the book greatly objected to it. Crowley noted that Eckenstein had '.an almost fanatical objection to publicity' and this may have upset him as wellas the publicising of a climbing area that climbers han almost spiritual realstinship with and feared hordes of tourists (see Hankinnson's 'A Century Of the Crags.' .A great rarity from a little documented part of the great occultist's life. Would repay further research. Very good indeed.
