The two became early settlers in Canterbury, establishing the Deans dynesty which still retains strong connections with the province. The book is based on the letters of the brothers and they graphically depict the problems facing early arrivals, particularly regarding land tenure. Both brothers died early, William in a shipwreck in 1851 and John in 1854, after becoming ill on a return voyage from Scotland, where he had married. Later, in turn, his son, also John, carried on the family farming enterprises the brothers had instigated and was consolidated by his widowed mother, to firmly establish one of Canterbury's notable founding families. A vivid record of pioneer days in NZ. First edition of 1937 from Reed, 312 pages including appendix and index, 11 b/w illustrations --- photos, art, drawings plans and documents. light brown hard covers are VG+ with impressed titles/borders to front with gilt arms of Wanganui Collegiate School at centre, minute bump to top front corner, small red mark adjacent spine lower back edge, spine with black titles lightly sunned, Wanganui Collegiate School prize plate to front pastedown, sprinkle foxing marks half title and title page, otherwise internally excellent, few foxing spots vertical page edges as closed.
