Les auteurs insistent sur le rôle des facteurs affectifs et émotionnels. Ils font appel pour le traitement à l'isolement quasi absolu. L'ouvrage comporte en frontispice une planche photographique représentant une salle d'isolement à La Salpêtrière. Cet ouvrage fut traduit en anglais en 1913.
