Published to accompany an exhibition which moved from the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin to the Guggenheim Museum, New York, in February 1998, this is a study of a series of paintings and drawings of Paris between 1909 and 1914 which established Robert Delaunay as a major artist. Delaunay developed a new aesthetic of abstraction in his pursuit of "pure painting" by synthesizing the Impressionist tradition of series painting and the contemporary language of Cubism. So bezeichnet er die Saint-Severin- und Eiffelturm-Serien, in der Manier der Kubisten als seine "destruktive" Periode, womit die Aufsplitterung des Bildgegenstandes und seine anschließende Neuordnung gemäß künstlerischer Kriterien gemeint ist. Doch schon zu Beginn unterschieden sich seine Interessen von denen der kubistischen Pioniere Georges Braque und Pablo Picasso. Allein die Tatsache, daß Delaunay nicht das bescheidene Motiv des Stillebens wählte, sondern dramatische architektonische Themen, trennte ihn von seinen Zeitgenossen. Im Gegensatz zu den Kubisten, die den Bildgegenstand lediglich als Ausgangspunkt benutzten, verlieh Delaunay seinen Architekturen eine machtvolle physische Präsenz mit geradezu ikonischer Wirkung. Für ihn war der Kubismus nur eine Sprache, die er zur Untersuchung umfassenderer Fragestellungen anwandte. Delaunays Freund, Guillaume Apollinaire, der Dichter, Kunstkritiker und bedeutende Interpret des Kubismus, betrachtete die Fenster-Serie als eine Erweiterung des Kubismus, der er den Namen Orphismus gab: eine puristischere Form des Kubismus, die sich vor allem mit Lichteffekten beschäftigt. Delaunay selber erklärte, daß er mit den Fenster-Bildern den Schritt von der "destruktiven" zur "konstruktiven" Phase seines Schaffens vollzogen habe. In einem Aufsatz Delaunays aus den zwanziger Jahren, beschreibt der Künstler, von sich in der dritten Person sprechend, sein Verhältnis zu Impressionismus und Expressionismus und reflektiert über Vorläufer und Vorbilder seiner Kunst, mit besonderer Betonung der Mont Sainte-Victoire-Serie Paul Cezannes und Claude Monets zahlreichen Serienbildern.
