In folio grande (42x30,5 cm); XX, 642, (4 b.) pp. e 82 c. di tav. fuori testo. Legatura coeva in mezza-pelle blu con titolo, autore e ricchissimi fregi in oro al dorso. Un piccolo difetto al margine alto della cerniera superiore del piatto posteriore, abilmente restaurata. Piatti foderati in tela azzurra, qualche lievissima spellatura agli angoli, assolutamente ininfluenti. Piatti interni foderati con bella carta marmorizzata coeva con doppio strato di rinforzo alle cerniere. Qualche macchiolina di foxing in alcune pagine, come tipico di tutti gli esemplari e nel complesso volume in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Prima edizione italiana illustrata dal Dorè del capolavoro di Ludovico Ariosto (Reggio nell'Emilia, 8 settembre 1474 Ferrara, 6 luglio 1533), Orlando Furioso. Il nostro esemplare, a differenza della maggior parte degli esemplari conosciuti e del numero delle tavole riportate in indice, presenta 82 tavole invece delle 81 solitamente presenti. L edizione, che si avvale anche di una prefazione scritta da Carducci, è considerata una delle più belle mai realizzate dedicate al celeberrimo poema cavalleresco pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1516 a Ferrara. Composto da 46 canti in ottave (38.736 versi in totale), in esso la storia si sviluppa intorno alla figura di Orlando e coinvolge numerosissimi altri personaggi. In esso Ariosto riprende la tradizione del ciclo carolingio ed in parte anche, del ciclo bretone realizzando una sorta di continuazione dell'incompiuto Orlando Innamorato di Matteo Maria Boiardo. Paul Gustave Louis Cristophe Doré (6 gennaio 1832 Parigi, 23 gennaio 1883) celebre pittore, disegnatore, litografo e incisore francese, fu l illustratore più famoso dell ottocento. Conosciuto per le sue illustrazioni della Divina Commedia di Dante, a lui si devono le più note edizioni ottocentesche illustrate dei classici della letteratura mondiale fra i quali il Paradiso Perduto, il Don Chisciotte e l Orlando Furioso. Artista estremamente eclettico e poliedrico, si impegnò a sviluppare tutte le tecniche ed i formati pittorici realizzando da enormi quadri a piccoli, passando da opere di estrema incisività e potenza a lavori semplici ma dal tratto graffiante. La pittura e l incisione non furono le sue sole passioni ma a lui si devono anche disegni e sculture. Capace di creare scene di estrema complessità ed impatto emotivo era capace anche di dipingere magnifici paesaggi dove il sublime, nella stretta concezione del Romanticismo di derivazione burkeniana, esprimeva tutta sua potenza sentimentale. L Orlando Furioso rappresenta l ultima serie dei grandi classici illustrati da Doré ed in esso l autore raggiunge i massimi livelli della sua arte. Oltre alle 82 magnifiche tavole a piena pagina, l opera presenta oltre 500 illustrazioni nel testo disegnate dal Doré ed incise in xilografia da alcuni dei più rinomati incisori dell ottocento francese come Laplante, Jonnard, Hildibrand, Barbant, Meaulle, Pisan, Gillot, Doms, Bertrand, Sargent, ecc. ecc. Cover and back decorated and gilded, the first cover adorned with a gilded griffin, bearing standard and coat of arms, on a background of patterns, with oak leaves and helm. Last illustrated book by Gustave Doré, -- -- Most pages and plates very clean. Very well preserved. The front cover is very well stamped, the gilding is bright. The gilding on the back is just a little tarnished, slight traces of handling, two small slots on the joints (max 2 cm). Solid hinges. fresh and clean interior, light scattered foxing, denser on the first few pages. --- --- Roland Furieux (Orlando Furioso) required a long preparation work and can be understood as a synthesis of all the themes dear to the artist: medieval frames, forests, battle scenes, heroines of sublimated beauty, fantastic atmosphere. Frontispiece and 81 steel-engraved plates, numerous steel-engraved text illustrations (some light spotting). Contemporary red three-quarter morocco with gilt rules, spine richly gilt, top edge gilt (extremities a little worn). Provenance: with the engraved armorial bookplate of Joseph and Josephine W. Drexel on the front paste-down; from the library of Jacques Levy, his sale, Sotheby's, 20th April 2012, lot 10 Limited issue, number 35 of 40 copies printed entirely on papier de Chine. 'Orlando Furioso' was the last of the great folios illustrated by Dore for Hachette. Dore drew his illustrations on paper and not directly on the wood blocks and so giving the artist more freedom in his creations than previously. Ariosto's "Orlando Furioso" is one of the great masterpieces of Italian Renaissance literature. First published in Ferrara 1516, in 40 cantos, and in its complete form of 46 cantos in 1532. "Orlando Furioso" (or "Mad Orlando") is a continuation of Matteo Maria Boiardo's unfinished romance "Orlando Innamorato" ("Orlando in Love", published posthumously in 1495). Orlando himself is very loosely based on Roland (of "The Song of Roland", the oldest surviving major work of French literature), a heroic knight in Charlemagne's court, intermingled with Arthurian and other influences. Orlando is driven "Furioso" or mad with love for the beautiful Angelica, and must be restored to sanity in time to save Paris from the Moslem hordes.
