Paperback. Etat : New. Etat de la jaquette : no dj. 'THE NAG AS - Memories of Headhunters - Indo-Burmese Borderlands - Volume 1' gives voice to the last protagonists of an almost vanished world. For the first time, former Naga headhunters and families talk extensively about their past, their fears and their hopes. Based on fieldwork and in-depth interviews conducted in Myanmar and on the Indian states of Nagaland, Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, this book gives a unique insight into the world of the Naga tribes and illustrates one of the last living examples of traditional culture. The mountain ranges situated between the far north-eastern part of India and the extreme northeast of Myanmar (Burma) house an incredible people of Tibeto-Burman origin, the Nagas. The number of tribes comprising the Nagas may vary among different scholars, but they are believed to include between 12 and 30 groups, with the major ones being the Angami, Ao, Lotha, Chakhesang, Konyak, Rengma, Sangtam, Yimchungru, Zeliangrong, Nocte, Phom, Khiamniungan, Pochuri,Tangkhul and Sema. These groups inhabit both sides of the Indo-Burmese borders in the Naga Hills, a sub-Himalayan region characterized by thick jungles and rugged mountains, known as 'the last mystery of Asia'. Until the middle of the 20,h century the men of these tribes were recognized as frightening headhunters, but despite their reputation, the Nagas were and are primarily farmers. Thus, it is not surprising that 'fertility' was seen as a 'power' that should be continually increased, secured and channeled towards the community. How deeply has this belief and the quest for fertility marked the culture of these tribes? To answer this question, the authors explore some flagship themes of the social sciences: the mechanisms of wealth distribution, how taboos influence society, what role institutions play, and how a culture can adapt to deep transformations. This volume will be followed by a second one focused on the Naga tribes' ornaments, textiles and tattoos, with, many high definition images and drawings illustrating the unique ornamental richness of the Naga's culture. Book.

Binding tight. 144pp During the last twenty years, tattooing has experienced a real renaissance in modern societies. For hundreds of years before this, however, Buddhist monks, using magical incantations and spells, have been covering people's bodies with indelible ink in the belief that the markings will bring luck, wealth, and blessings. People remain convinced that tattoos provide protection against evil spirits and can render the bearer invulnerable, even to stab wounds and bullets. Known in Thailand as Sak Yant, these ancient tattoos are today experiencing a revival in popularity, both in their countries of origin and beyond. Fashion or social phenomenon, the demand for magical tattoos keeps rising. Hollywood stars, Singaporean businessmen, people from all walks of life flock to Thai Sak Yant Masters to have these powerful designs inked onto their bodies. At the same time, these tattooists are regularly invited to practice their art abroad, thus increasing the popularity of Sak Yant worldwide. Why do these sacred tattoos provoke such passion? Who are these men who perform Sak Yant, and who are those who get tattooed? Do these tattoos really have magical powers? These questions raise the issue of the influence not only of tattoos but also of amulets, cultural and religious beliefs and rituals, on the mind and health of the individual. Although, formerly regarded as irrational, today's scientific studies show how these beliefs influence a person's life and how tattoos and other symbols can work as placebos. Drawing on a wide range of contributions and from research fields as diverse as anthropology, religion, history, medicine and psychology, Thai Magic Tattoos - The Art and Influence of Sak Yant attempts to provide some understanding of the mechanisms by which a tattoo may actually change the life of the bearer. The book is based on extensive fieldwork over a period of three years in Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos. Using their own photographs, field notes and in-depth interviews of Masters and Sak Yant believers, the authors provide a unique insight into the world of sacred tattoos and in doing so illustrate one of the last living examples of authentic traditional tattooing. Many Colour and B/W Photographs. A form of tattooing practiced in Southeast Asia, Sak Yant is rooted in a combination of Theravada Buddhism, Brahmanism, and animism. While the master engraves the skin, the devotee goes into a trance or in a state of deep meditation. The Sak Yant masters frequently Buddhist monks are seen as spiritual mediums who imbue the tattoos they create with magical spells for prosperity, protection, and happiness. Popular images include real and mythical animals from the Hindu pantheon or their symbols, such as Shiva s trident. The principle inspiration for Sak Yant, however, is Buddhist iconography and the most prized image is that of the Buddha. Thai Magic Tattoos gives a brief history of tattoos in general and Sak Yant in particular. It profiles various Sak Yant masters, outlines the ritualized process of Sak Yant tattooing sessions, and attempts to explain why these sacred tattoos inspire such passion. The text is lavishly illustrated with photography by Rene Drouyer. Table Of Contents A brief history of Tattoos Why do people have tattoos?
