Leather. Etat : Very Good. 1st edition. 1st edition. Volumes 1 and 2 only (of 3). A Very Good set. 12mo., [Vol.1] 392; [Vol.2] vi, 394 pp. illustrated with engraved title pages. Bound in period full calf, with title and volume on black morocco labels on the decorated spines. All edges and end papers marbled. Light edge wear and light soiling to the leather boards. Some of the gilt decoration rubbed on the spine. Pages nearest the paste downs are foxing. The text is otherwise very clean. Volume 1(1836): St. Columba, Alfred The Great, Chaucer, John Heywood, Spenser. Volume 2(1837): William Shakespear, Ben Johnson, Philip Massinger, John Ford, John Webster, Minor Dramatists.

Binding appears to be original, although lacking any publisher's logo, identical to other volumes in this series that I have seen. Despite a few minor faults (back Vol.1 pigment loss being most serious) an unusually good set of this scarce set, apparently in original condition.
