Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Gift quality undated, circa 1880 hardcover in olive green cloth with elegantly and ornately illustrated boards. Title on frt board framed in black with elements found in nature, a bird's nest w/eggs, a butterfly, moth, rose, bee, fish, crawdad. Backstrip title in bright gilt with a vignette of a jumping fish with pond greenery in the forefront. Corners bumped but not rubbed, displays beautifully. End pages browned, inner hinges fine. few outer leaves carelessly opened in rear, no major loss, or loss to any text, some small chips and closed tears. 260 pp plus 8pg index. 2 pp of adverts in frt and rear. No marks, tears or names. Not exlib. 42 Illustrations throughout the text including full page line drawn plates of various types of fishes, line drawings of knots, tackle, rods, and gear. Few photos and one very charming, peaceful art reproduction signed by Lewis Cohen of a gentleman with his hat, coat, and pipe in a long boat with his line in the water waiting patiently. From the Preface: In the following pages Mr. Wheeley gives a practical account of the modern methods of taking coarse fish, with special reference to the Thames. The chapters on perch and pike have been included to render the work complete, though a later volume of the Library, contributed by Mr. A. Jardine deals exclusively with those fish. The flounder though ostensibly, a sea-fish, finds appropriate place in any work on river, particularly tidal, fishing; and the concluding chapters on Thames trout gives the latest methods - practically coarse-fishing - of taking that remarkable fish. The Editors have to acknowledge some assistance in connection with the illustrations, their thanks being more particularly due to Messrs. Allcock and Bartleet of Reddich, Cummins of Bishop Auckland, Farlow of London, Hardy Bros. of Alnwich and Watson and Hancock of London. A superb example and a fine addition for the actual or armchair angler.

During the first decade of the twentieth century, the demand for hunting far outstripped the supply of the hunting areas, especially that of markhor. The drive to bag a record size trophy of the 'patriarch' resulted in the shooting of many not so magnificent heads. Bairnsfather, who hunted in Astor and Gilgit in the 1913, looked for a "really good head" of markhor and wrote the following: E-79; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 137 pages.
