In the Fiorst World War the Hampshire had 36 battalions serving - a higher percentage of men than had any other county. But their history is much older that than. Raised in Ireland in 1702 by Thomas Meredith, an officer of William III's army, they began their active career in Marlborough's battles in the War of the Spanish Succession. When regiments were numbered they became the 37th Regiment of Foot and were later united with the 67th and became the North and South Hampshires. They gained numerous battle honours and in the attack on the Taku Forts in China on the morning of 21st August 1860 four of their men were awarded V.C.'s - all won, as tradition has it, 'before breakfast'. There is scarcely a theatre of war in which they have not been seen - India, China, the West Indies, Palestine, Russia, Europe, Malaya, Egypt, Canada; and if there have been long periods in which they have had to fight only diseases of tropical climates, or keep the peace among disorderly factions, their history also glows with action - including the unique battle at Minden in 1759, in which they were one of the infantry regiments who put the French cavalry to rout. The auth, who was in the 10th battalion in the early part of World War II and continued with them during their tranformation into 147th Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps, until the disbandment in 1945, tells the Royal Hampshires' story colourfully and with great attention to narrative interest. Here is no desiccated exploration of brass-hars' battle strategy but a book of immense human interest in which a famous county regiment is seen growing and acquiring its long traditions and heroic record. Illustrated. 128 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
